Salon des Refuses

July 6, 2019 @ 12:00 pm - 5:00 pm

In 1863 the most prestigious exhibition in Paris, the Paris Salon, rejected art work in the new Impressionist style. Manet, Courbet, Whistler and Pissaro were among the rejected artists. In protest they exhibited their work in their own exhibit, the now famous “Salon des Refuses,” which brought their beautiful and innovative work to the public – and made them famous. nIn recognition of the fact that a lot of wonderful work doesn’t get accepted into art exhibits we are holding our own “Salon Des Refuses.” nJuror: Dr. Dena Gilby, Professor, Endicott College received her Ph.D. in Art History with the dissertation, “Weeping Rocks: The Stone Transformation of Niobe and her Children,” from the University of Wisconsin-Madison where she also received her Master’s degree. Her Bachelor’s degrees in English Literature and Classical Humanities was obtained from St. Louis University in St. Louis, Missouri. She has held positions in the Wisconsin Percent for Art Program, as an intern at the St. Louis Art Museum and at the Getty Research Institute. Prior to arriving at Endicott College in 1997, Dr. Gilby taught a survey of Art History at Montserrat College of Art. Dr. Gilby’s research is broad-based and covers a variety of chronological periods, but is united by its focus on identity. In addition to her teaching of a variety of periods and themes within the history of art, Dr. Gilby also acts as a faculty leader for Endicott College’s Spanish Culture Course held each January in Madrid, Spain. nExhibition Dates: June 8, 2019 – July 28, 2019 nGallery Hours are every Saturday and Sunday from 12:00 – 5:00 p.m. nPlease contact gallery@salemarts.org with questions. n Source: https://www.salem.org/event/salon-des-refuses/2019-07-06/
