1630’s Printing Demo at The House of the Seven Gables

July 6, 2019 @ 10:00 am - 4:00 pm

Today’s rabble rousers, insurrectionists and politicians use Twitter to get the message out. Back in Revolutionary times, they used engraving tools, acid, ink and copper plates to craft their messages. nThose interested in early public communications devices are invited to The House of the Seven Gables Saturday, July 6, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Throughout the day Andy Volpe will demonstrate how revolutionaries like silversmith Paul Revere used his skills to inscribe not just anniversary dates on commemorative silver bowls but to create revolutionary materials, like his “Boston Massacre” print, to express if not incite passions. nVolpe, an artist, educator and historian with a special expertise in early printmaking, will demonstrate various 17th- and 18th-century engraving techniques as well as use of a portable printing press. Visitors will be able to watch Volpe at work, ask questions and view pieces that he prints.nThe event is included in the cost of paid admission and free for members. It will be at The House of the Seven Gables, 115 Derby St., Salem. Some parking is available. Those interested may call Dan Marshall for additional information at 978-744-0991, ext. 101, or email at dmarshall@7gables.org. n Source: https://www.salem.org/event/1630s-printing-demo-at-the-house-of-the-seven-gables/
