Tragedy on the Harbor: The Sinking of His Majesty’s Customs Boat

Join Essex Heritage and historian Curtis White on this special excursion on Salem Sound to commemorate and bring attention to the tragic sinking of His Majesty’s Customs Boat in a freak storm on June 17, 1773 in which 10 passengers perished. Also learn about little known stories of His Majesty’s Customs for the ports of Salem and Marblehead.
During this 3-hour journey, you’ll take a trip across Salem Sound to Bakers Island Light Station, where you can enjoy a bring-your-own picnic lunch, and some complimentary iced tea provided by Essex Heritage, where you’ll learn about the background of the incident, as well as hear some fascinating tales of pre-Revolutionary maritime activity in Salem.
Boat Departure Location: Naumkeag departs from Central Wharf at the Salem Maritime National Historic Site, Salem MA 01970.
