About this event

*We are now able to offer this program at a lower rate of $15/person.

Join us for Rigging a Tall Ship, part of The Art of Wooden Boatbuilding: A Field Institute in Preserving the Past  exploring the principles behind the design and construction of traditional wooden boats. Participants will have the opportunity to experience hands-on practices at several traditional boatyards within the Essex National Heritage Area.

This event is Rigging a Tall Ship.

At Salem Maritime National Historic Site, you will:

  • Learn about the principles of rigging design, operation and function for Friendship of Salem, a full-rigged ship and how these sometimes transfer to other vessels
  • Examine Friendship of Salem’s masts, yards, working tops and standing rigging, currently stored on site, to see how they are built and dressed
  • Practice techniques in Pedrick’s Storehouse (Friendship of Salem’s rigging and maintenance area)
  • Learn the uses of and try your hand at knots, bends, hitches and worming, parceling and serving
  • Discuss a few of the most significant changes in building a laminated compared to a traditionally built vessel

This hands-on workshop session is $15/person.

This Field Institute is a program designed to expand the interpretive themes of the Salem Maritime and Saugus Ironworks National Historic Sites to a larger, regional scope within the Essex National Heritage Area.
