Terra Nova with Oracle Hysterical and Hub New Music

Composer-collective Oracle Hysterical, with collaborators Hub New Music, presents the world premiere of an evening-length collection of songs inspired by the expeditions of a wide-ranging group of ambitious, gritty — and often cruel — myopic explorers. Text comes from the journals of European “New World” explorers like Christopher Columbus, Hernán Cortés and Hernando de Soto; Puritan women on their new frontier; pilot Amelia Earhart; naturalist John James Audubon; ill-fated Arctic explorer Robert Falcon Scott; the ancient king Gilgamesh and his quest to cheat death; and the Chinese mariner, treasure seeker and builder of giant ships Zheng He. These authors and subjects, captivated by unchartered territory, share an often combustible mix of guts, ego, naivete, greed and unwavering determination. The results of their discoveries range from beautiful to terrifying, or sometimes both. This dynamic, semi-staged performance includes lighting design by Mary Ellen Stebbins.
Part band, part book club, Oracle Hysterical combines eclectic musical influences with literary breadth. Hub New Music, a frequent PEM collaborator, is a Boston-based quartet ensemble that celebrates the diversity of today’s classical music landscape through creative programming and ambitious commissioning projects.
