Salem Diaries: Personal Perspectives on the Past (POSTPONED)

May 2, 2020 @ 3:00 pm

The Reverend William Bentley’s diary of his life in Federal-era Salem is a justly famous source, but it is just one of many diaries kept by Salem men and women which can shed light on life in the eighteenth, nineteenth, and twentieth centuries. Join us at the Pickering House, c. 1660, where Dr. Donna Seger of Salem State University will survey a succession of diaries in the collection of the Peabody Essex Museum’s Phillips Library, the main repository of Salem history, including journals kept by merchants, missionaries, shopkeepers, socialites, artists and authors, charting life both at home in Salem and abroad over three centuries.
