2019 Americana Lecture at Hamilton Hall

November 17, 2019 @ 2:00 pm - 4:00 pm

Please join us for the Americana Lecture 2019 at Hamilton Hall. This year we are excited to have world-renowned Philip C. Lowe, Director of the Furniture Institute of Massachusetts. Mr. Lowe will be discussing restoration and reproduction of Federal-era furniture, specifically that of Samuel McIntire. Enjoy the unique opportunity to see examples of reproduced furniture firsthand while enjoying refreshments before the lecture. After detailing the process of re-creating chairs for the Pierce-Nichols house, he will perform a live demonstration by carving a ball-and-claw foot in his own unique style. This is sure to be an enlightening and inspiring afternoon.

About the speaker
Philip C. Lowe
As a young man Phil Lowe took a shine to woodworking, and through the years his interest evolved into a passion. In 1972, he entered the furniture making program at North Bennett School in Boston, subsequently becoming an instructor at the school and eventually rising to department head. In 1986, Phil left North Bennett to devote his energies to the full-time operation of his furniture making business. The business is still in operation today, serving primarily as an educational tool for his recently founded furniture-making school, the Furniture Institute of Massachusetts. Phil still appears as a visiting instructor, seminar speaker and demonstrator at various schools in the United States and Canada.
In 2005, Phil received the Cartouche Award, the highest honor bestowed by the Society of American Period Furniture Makers. Phil was also chosen in 2010 for the Artisanship Award given by the Institute of Classical Architecture and Art.

Note: Proceeds of this event benefit the ongoing restoration of the Hall.
