SUMMARY:Antigone
DESCRIPTION:Sophocles’ timeless story centers on Antigone\, a young Theban woman determined to bury and honor her two brothers\, both killed fighting for the throne on opposite sides of a civil war. Upon their deaths\, her uncle Creon is crowned Theban ruler. He determines that her brother Eteocles is to be honored for his part in the conflict. He brands her rebellious brother Polynices a traitor who will be publicly shamed in death\, leaving his body unburied beyond the city walls.\n\nAntigone refuses to accept this most severe of punishments. Defying her uncle she dares to say ‘No’ and in an act of civil disobedience\, forges ahead with a funeral alone. Speaking truth to power she puts humanity before hubris even at risk to her own life.\n\nA new translation by Anne Carson\n\nDirected by Julie Kiernan\nFor mature audiences.\n\nTICKETS – visit www.salemstatetickets.com\n$15 general/$10 seniors/free for all students with student ID and under 18.

SUMMARY:Spiritualism Tours of Hammond Castle Museum
DESCRIPTION:Since its completion in 1929\, Hammond Castle Museum has attracted rumors and urban legends of supernatural associations and occult happening. While most of these wild stories can be dismissed as pure fiction\, the building occupies a fascinating place within the broader historical context of the development of spiritualist and spiritualist-adjacent fields in American culture. The spiritualist movement enthralled America’s upper and middle classes during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Both John Hays Hammond Jr. and his wife\, Irene\, were fascinated with wide-ranging topics including Astrology\, Divination\, Numerology\, Extrasensory Perception (ESP)\, and Mediumship. \nEvery Thursday evening in August\, September\, and October (and even a couple of Wednesday nights in October too) we offer Spiritualism Tours\, This specialty tour explores the history of American spiritualism\, with a particular focus on contextualizing the movement within broader contemporary cultural trends and discussing the Hammonds’ own complicated engagements with these cultural phenomena. From John Hays Hammond Jr.’s attempts to communicate with supernatural entities using a Faraday Cage\, to Irene Hammond’s work on a comprehensive survey of astrological signs; over the course of this approximately 55-minute fully-guided tour\, the dramatic gothic-inspired architecture of the building and night-time atmosphere will set the stage for a fun and informative seasonal experience unlike any other! \nCarry-In/Carry-Out Picnics: Guests may enjoy a carry-in/carry-out picnic on our seaside lawn before their tour on Thursday evenings in August! Reservations are $5 per party and start one hour prior to your ticketed evening tour. Reservations are required in advance.  Hammond Castle Museum members enjoy complimentary picnic reservations.

SUMMARY:CHRISTMAS IN SALEM HOLIDAY HOUSE TOUR 2023
DESCRIPTION: Historic Salem\, Inc. (HSI) is pleased to announce that tickets for this year’s Christmas in Salem house tour are now available online at www.historicsalem.org.  2023 is the 44th year of offering a collection of homes bedecked for the holidays and a variety of seasonal musical entertainment.  The annual tour has become a Christmas tradition for many residents and friends on the North Shore. \nThis year’s tour is scheduled for Saturday and Sunday\, December 2 and 3\, and is themed “An On Common Christmas” as it features homes around the Salem Common.  In the 1600s the Salem Common was a swampy area used for livestock grazing and militia training.  In 1801 Elias Haskett Derby led an effort to fill in the swamp\, plant trees and lay out walkways.  This made the surrounding area highly desirable for residential use.  Many of the homes featured on this year’s Christmas in Salem holiday house tour date back to this time when spacious Federal-style mansions were built. \nThe Salem Armory located at the corner of Essex and Liberty Streets in downtown Salem will be the starting point for this year’s tour where guests can pick up and purchase day of tickets.  The Armory dates to the late 18th century.  In 1982\, the beautiful Gothic Revival building was nearly destroyed by fire.  The remaining drill shed was converted into the Salem Armory Visitor Center in 1994.  The area between the drill shed and the corner of New Liberty and Essex Streets was turned into Armory Park\, honoring the veterans of Essex County. \nBack by popular demand is an optional candle-lit preview to three homes between 6:45pm and 9:15pm on Friday December 1st where participants will be offered hors d’oeuvres and a wine tasting.  Tickets for Friday’s preview are limited and are an option offered when people purchase their Christmas in Salem tickets online.  Tickets for the preview include the option to return over the weekend to tour the remaining houses. \nTickets for Christmas in Salem are available online at www.historicsalem.org at a cost of $40 for non-Historic Salem\, Inc. members and $35 for HSI members.  Tickets purchased the day of the tour are $45.  Tour tickets including the Friday night candle-lit preview are $120 for non-HSI members and $100 for members of Historic Salem\, Inc.  Christmas in Salem proceeds support the preservation mission of Historic Salem\, Inc.
