As demonstrated in the museum’s recent exhibition The Creative Legacy of Nathaniel Hawthorne: Selections from the Phillips Library Collection\, the story’s characters and major themes continue to inspire artists in a variety of fields. \nJoin us as Richard Kopley\, distinguished professor of English Emeritus at Penn State DuBois\, discusses his techniques of close reading\, biographical analysis and archival research to provide insight into Hawthorne’s masterpiece. DESCRIPTION:Join us for The Scarlet Letter(s): The Life and Loves of Nathaniel Hawthorne Virtual Tour on Friday\, July 3 at 7 pm. The cost is $7.50. You only need to purchase one ticket but several people can watch with you. \nHawthorne was born on July 4\, 1805 in Salem\, Massachusetts and is a direct descendant of Judge John Hathorne\, the “hanging judge” during the 1692 Salem Witchcraft Trials. Hawthorne was 4 years old when his dad was lost at sea and was very much introverted. He was a brooding and pensive fellow who attended Bowdoin College. He had a small group of friends and exchanged letters with so many (no email then). \nUpon his death\, he asked his friends and family to destroy all personal letters between them. Few did. Many letters survive to this day\, revealing the true nature of one of our greatest American authors. \nVeteran Tour guide Bob Gautreau will perform as Hawthorne and will regale you with stories of his life and will read from letters he wrote and received. \nThe event is live but we will show you locations around Salem\, Massachusetts via virtual background and screen shares. DESCRIPTION:2020 details will be announced this summer\, see information from 2019 below.  \nFestivities begin at 5:00 p.m. when Kids’ Space opens\, an area filled with free face painting\, games\, and crafts for little ones. Also at 5:00 p.m. DITTO will entertain the crowd on main stage. Lead vocalists and guitarists Gary Santarella and Roger Kimball have entertained audiences for over forty years and play mainstream music classics of James Taylor\, Simon and Garfunkel\, Crosby Stills and Nash\, and more. \nThere are food vending tents on site selling hot dogs\, French fries\, fried dough\, kettle corn\, and other favorites. \nAt 7:15 p.m. opening ceremonies begin led by Mayor Kimberly Driscoll and Salem Veterans and Salem Boy Scout Color Guards. The singing of the National Anthem will be performed by Salem High School’s a cappella group Witch Pitch? followed by a two hour ‘POPS’ concert by the Hillyer Festival Orchestra\, a forty-piece ensemble featuring vocal soloist Jacyn Tremblay with a special intermission show featuring the Salem Collins Middle School Chorus. \nAt 9:15 p.m. a magnificent fireworks display is launched from Derby Wharf accompanied by live music from the orchestra.

Also at 5:00 p.m. DITTO will entertain the crowd on main stage. Lead vocalists and guitarists Gary Santarella and Roger Kimball have entertained audiences for over forty years and play mainstream music classics of James Taylor\, Simon and Garfunkel\, Crosby Stills and Nash\, and more. \nThere are food vending tents on site selling hot dogs\, French fries\, fried dough\, kettle corn\, and other favorites. \nAt 7:15 p.m. opening ceremonies begin led by Mayor Kimberly Driscoll and Salem Veterans and Salem Boy Scout Color Guards. The singing of the National Anthem will be performed by Salem High School’s a cappella group Witch Pitch? followed by a two hour ‘POPS’ concert by the Hillyer Festival Orchestra\, a forty-piece ensemble featuring vocal soloist Jacyn Tremblay with a special intermission show featuring the Salem Collins Middle School Chorus. \nAt 9:15 p.m. a magnificent fireworks display is launched from Derby Wharf accompanied by live music from the orchestra.
