DESCRIPTION:Since its completion in 1929\, Hammond Castle Museum has attracted rumors and urban legends of supernatural associations and occult happening. While most of these wild stories can be dismissed as pure fiction\, the building occupies a fascinating place within the broader historical context of the development of spiritualist and spiritualist-adjacent fields in American culture. The spiritualist movement enthralled America’s upper and middle classes during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Both John Hays Hammond Jr. and his wife\, Irene\, were fascinated with wide-ranging topics including Astrology\, Divination\, Numerology\, Extrasensory Perception (ESP)\, and Mediumship. \nEvery Thursday evening in August\, September\, and October (and even a couple of Wednesday nights in October too) we offer Spiritualism Tours\, This specialty tour explores the history of American spiritualism\, with a particular focus on contextualizing the movement within broader contemporary cultural trends and discussing the Hammonds’ own complicated engagements with these cultural phenomena. From John Hays Hammond Jr.’s attempts to communicate with supernatural entities using a Faraday Cage\, to Irene Hammond’s work on a comprehensive survey of astrological signs; over the course of this approximately 55-minute fully-guided tour\, the dramatic gothic-inspired architecture of the building and night-time atmosphere will set the stage for a fun and informative seasonal experience unlike any other! \nCarry-In/Carry-Out Picnics: Guests may enjoy a carry-in/carry-out picnic on our seaside lawn before their tour on Thursday evenings in August! Reservations are $5 per party and start one hour prior to your ticketed evening tour. Reservations are required in advance.  Hammond Castle Museum members enjoy complimentary picnic reservations.

SUMMARY:North Indian Classical Music Concert
DESCRIPTION:Award-winning santoor maestro Kunal Gunjal\, disciple of the legendary Pt. Shiv Kumar Sharma\, presents an evening of North Indian classical music in memory of his late teacher\, accompanied by tabla virtuoso Aditya Kalyanpur. \nKunal Gunjal is a master of the santoor\, a hundred-stringed box zither akin to the hammered dulcimer. His teacher\, Padma Vibhushan Pt. Shiv Kumar Sharma (1938-2022)\, is largely responsible for introducing the instrument into the tradition of North Indian classical music\, borrowing and extending on the santoor’s original role in the Sufiana Mausiqi tradition from Kashmir. As the youngest disciple of Pt. Sharma\, Kunal has performed in various prestigious music festivals and conferences throughout India and the U.S. including the Devnandan Ubhyakar Yuva Sangeet Utsav and the Gunidas Sangeet Samelan where he opened the festival for Ustad Zakir Hussian. He has many accolades to his honor including the Dr. Vasantrao Deshpande Yuva Kalakar Puraskar and was also awarded at Vedic Heritage by Sangeet Martand Pandit Jasraj. Kunal is also a recipient of the National Scholarship\, awarded by the Ministry of Culture\, Government of India and the Sawai Gandharva Scholarship. He has produced an album which features santoor in a western film score. This album has also been nominated for the Hollywood Music in Media Awards. \nAditya Kalyanpur is a regular guest artist at Salem State since 2009. A child prodigy who was groomed by the colossal figures of tabla\, Ustad Alla Rakha and his son and world music superstar Ustad Zakir Hussain\, Aditya Kalyanpur carries the torch of the Punjab gharana through an intense touring schedule and by teaching a vast array of students throughout the world. He established the New England School of Music (NESOM) in 2008 and currently splits his time between Mumbai and Southern California\,
