SUMMARY:“The Salem Witch Trials: Reckoning and Reclaiming” at the Peabody Essex Museum
DESCRIPTION:More than 300 years after the Salem witch trials\, artistic imaginations remain engaged by the personal tragedies and grave injustices of this historic crisis. In this exhibition\, learn more about factors that fueled the hysteria and individuals who rose to defend those unjustly accused and explore two creative responses by artists with ancestral links to the trials. Both projects directly speak to the historical trauma evident in the authentic 17th-century documents and objects on view and provide a powerful contemporary response.\nThe fashion designer Alexander McQueen’s Fall/Winter 2007 collection In Memory of Elizabeth How\, 1692 was based on research into his ancestor Elizabeth How\, one of the first women to be condemned and hanged as a witch in July 1692. McQueen’s work reclaims How’s power and memory from the false accusation that led to her unjust execution. He also mined historic symbols of witchcraft\, paganism\, religious persecution\, and magic as potent inspiration for his fashion design.\nPhotographer Frances F. Denny’s series Major Arcana: Portraits of Witches in America reclaims the meaning of the word “witch” from its historical use as a tool to silence and control women. Her portraits re-envision witchery by celebrating the spectrum of identities and spiritual practices found in today’s witch community.\nIn this exhibition\, a multitude of voices will share their personal histories and perspectives\, drawn from authentic documents\, artist statements\, and interviews.\nLearn more here.\nThe Salem Witch Trials: Reckoning and Reclaiming is organized by the Peabody Essex Museum. Carolyn and Peter S. Lynch and The Lynch Foundation\, Jennifer and Andrew Borggaard\, James B. and Mary Lou Hawkes\, Kate and Ford O’Neil\, and Henry and Callie Brauer provided generous support. We also recognize the generosity of the East India Marine Associates of the Peabody Essex Museum.

SUMMARY:Orlando by Virginia Woolf\, Adapted by Sarah Ruhl
DESCRIPTION:Orlando\, a beautiful charismatic nobleman\, has enjoyed a lifetime of adventures: he becomes the favorite of Queen Elizabeth the First\, he dallies with many fine ladies\, losing his heart to one mysterious Russian Princess\, he wanders Shakespeare’s London and endures the chill of the Great Frost\, he travels to Constantinople\, where his reputation for spectacular debauchery is indeed vast. But after a nighttime encounter with a gypsy\, Orlando sleeps for seven days and wakes to live again — as a woman. As Orlando adapts her bold\, free demeanor to the strict and hampering skirts and expectations of feminine behavior\, the changing world around her — from Victorian England to the busy department stores of the 20th century — illustrates the mutability of man and woman\, and instinct of each to fit their place and time. \nA dreamy adaptation of Virginia Woolf’s novel\, Sarah Ruhl’s Orlando is a magical and poetic dance between gender and through time\, a fantastical world in which courtly movement and biographical narration combine to tell the story of a being who lives outside of human expectations\, and enjoys twice the experience that humanity has to offer. \nTickets: $15 general\, $10 seniors\, free under 18 and college students with ID \nPurchase tickets at www.salemstatetickets.com

SUMMARY:Writing Workshop – Unsympathetic Villains: Crafting Scarier Antagonists
DESCRIPTION:Pop culture is full of villains with redemption stories: everyone from Disney villains to the darkest Young Adult antagonists seem to get a prequel or flashback explaining what made them “bad.” But what about when villains have no redemptive excuses\, how do you write believable\, scary villains for your heroes without making them one-dimensional? In this session\, we’ll talk about motivations for irredeemable villains\, the choice to use this type of antagonist and what kinds of stories they work well in\, and how to make them believable without going over the top. \n  \nBased in Salem\, Massachusetts\, Matt Phillion is the author of The Indestructibles YA superhero novel series\, its spinoff Echo and the Sea\, and the Dungeon Crawlers fantasy novellas.
