SUMMARY:‘Dominican Faceless Dolls’ at Salem Armory Regional Visitor Center
DESCRIPTION:Salem Maritime National Historic Site announces the installation of Dominican Faceless Dolls\, a bilingual (English/Spanish) exhibit on display May 7 – June 30\, Wednesday – Sunday\, 10 am – 4pm at the Salem Armory Regional Visitor Center\, 2 New Liberty Street in Salem. Co-created with North Shore Community Development Coalition (North Shore CDC)\, the exhibit celebrates Salem’s global connections and Caribbean culture with artwork and stories by residents of the Point neighborhood (also known as El Punto).\n\nDominican Faceless Dolls inspiration stems from a popular handicraft of the Dominican Republic\, Muñecas Limé. These small\, ceramic figures that lack faces symbolize Dominican women\, culture and diversity. “Dominican Faceless Dolls fosters a connection with new and existing audiences to find cultural relevancy at the site specifically with Essex County’s Latinx community\,” said Program Manager of Visitor Experience and Community Engagement\, Susan Russo. \n“We are grateful for this partnership with Salem Maritime\,” said North Shore CDC Chief Executive Officer\, Mickey Northcutt. “The exhibit honors the beautiful cultural significance of the Dominican faceless dolls and people of the Dominican community in Salem.” \n“This exhibition is special because it offers people from all walks of life\, who are either familiar with these dolls or learning about them for the first time\, the opportunity to share their own stories through creative expression”\, said Yinette Guzman\, Design & Placemaking Project Manager at North Shore CDC. “These new works of art continue the tradition of Muñecas Limé and represent the identity and cultural heritage of each artist.” \nThe North Shore CDC selected nineteen paper dolls and three artist stories for Dominican Faceless Dolls. With bios\, poems\, and personalized\, paper dolls\, the exhibit shares Salem stories of migration\, heritage\, and intersecting identities. The co-creators of the exhibit invite visitors to share their own stories on interactive panels with questions centered on discovery of self and community. \nThe National Park Service extends special thanks to the Latino Heritage Internship Program (LHIP). Dominican Faceless Dolls follows a 2021 exhibit proposal and a series of online resources developed by LHIP interns Tahmoor Chadury and Karla Bonilla. Visitors are invited to further explore and make their own faceless\, paper doll by visiting www.nps.gov/articles/000/faceless-dolls.htm.

SUMMARY:My Journey to Morocco
DESCRIPTION:Indra Persad Milowe is a Trinidad born visual artist living and working in Salem\, Massachusetts\, U.S.A. Her art brings to life many of her childhood memories of growing up in Trinidad in the 1950’s and 1960’s. \nMy interest is in nature\, still life and design. I adored my St. Augustine Girls High School art teacher\, Mrs. Helga Mohammed from Madrid\, Spain. She was married to a Trinidadian. On my first day in her class at age 12\, written on her blackboard was: “Art is not only a painting hanging up on a wall\, art is in every aspect of your daily life.” These words have stuck in my head ever since. My paintings were chosen for the high school’s yearbook for two consecutive years. At age 15\, I painted from nature\, orchids on a branch. At age 16\, I did a still life\, a display of an apple\, pear\, and a bunch of grapes. Those two paintings and all the incredible reviews that came with them lifted my confidence in my artwork. There is a personal story behind every one of my paintings. I painted every single festival celebrated in Trinidad as well as all the folklore stories that I heard while growing up. \nI retired from general\, ophthalmic and psychiatric nursing in 2019 after having worked in England\, Malta\, Trinidad and the United States. Through British Nurses Overseas\, I was able to work in different countries. Ultimately\, I decided to go back to art during my retirement. I prefer working on canvas with multi-colored and gold acrylic paints.

SUMMARY:Salem Farmers’ Market
DESCRIPTION:The Salem Farmers’ Market is a tradition that dates back to 1634. With its peak around 1930\, where more than 40 vendors sold goods in collapsible wooden stalls\, an estimated 10\,000 people visited the market on a single Saturday. In the early 1970s\, the market ended\, and the Salem Redevelopment Authority redesigned the square into what we now know as Derby Square.\n\nThe Salem Farmers’ Market typically runs early June to mid-October\, every Thursday from 3 pm to 7 pm.\n\nPlease note\, beginning August 19\, the market will be moved back to Derby Square.

SUMMARY:Tactical Bouzouki at Old Town Hall
DESCRIPTION:Enjoy our final evening at Old Town Hall with a performance of Greek\, English\, Irish\, and American tunes using authentic instruments of the Rebetiko tradition! \n\nTactical Bouzouki plays Rebetika (Greek urban blues) and Smyrneika (music emerging from a confluence of musically sophisticated refugees from Asia Minor and marginalized classes in Greek cities in the early 20th century) and classic English\, Irish\, and American tunes.  The Greek music features eastern modal scales and odd metered rhythms\, as well as lyrical content reflecting period struggles which have a universal resonance. We use authentic instruments out of the Rebetiko tradition:  the baghlama\, tzoura\, and bouzouki\, as well as the guitar and accordion. We like to make it more interesting for ourselves and the audience by incorporating traditional Greek instruments no matter what country the music is from. The classic American and European pieces that we play are fun and familiar for people of wide ranging ages and cultural backgrounds.

SUMMARY:Edward Bradstreet: Salem Arts Association
DESCRIPTION:My photography doesn’t follow a particular style or theme\, though often I photograph the patterns I see in everyday life. My interest with photography began as a teen with my parent’s Kodak Duaflex II point & shoot film camera. In my early twenties I graduated into a my first 35mm & learned to do basic darkroom techniques. Today with the convenience of digital photography\, which I now exclusively shoot\, helps enormously in determining how I approach creating the final print. Converting my shots into black & white\, is a favorite nostalgic throwback for me\, & is the method I use when creating many of my images. Other times I may rely on manipulating an image to enhance the result. Some people may feel that one must be a purist when taking photographs\, but I consider myself primarily an artist using photography as one of the tools at my disposal to better express my vision. \nWhat is most important for me is when people express pleasure when they see the results of my work\, then I’ve achieved my goals as an artist. \nExhibit: July 1 to 31

SUMMARY:Karen Hosking; A Splash of Color
DESCRIPTION:My goal is to see things through the camera that might be otherwise missed\, to see the familiar in new ways. I try to apply this perspective to a variety of genres of photography\, including architecture\, scenic\, and people. I am especially enamored of black and white photography\, as it allows the essential aspect of a scene to emerge – line\, light and shadow\, composition\, and\, most importantly\, emotion and feeling. \nExhibit: July 1 to 31

SUMMARY:Witch Trials Ancestor and Descendants Tour
DESCRIPTION:Salem will be 400 years old in 2026. It is rich in history\, including a critical role in the American Revolution and being the richest seaport per capita from 1790 to 1812. And then there is the 1692 Witch Trials. There were 156 official complaints and maybe 200 accused\, along with 70 afflicted persons\, nine judges\, dozens of jurors and hundreds who observed the trials. Calculations estimate that there could be 100 million descendants from the 1692 Witchcraft Trials. Many descendants know but many don’t know. Most of them have never been in the public eye. However\, many of them are famous and some are infamous. You’ll be surprised. \nThis tour will bring you throughout the downtown area of old Salem Towne and will discuss key people involved in the 1692 Witchcraft Trials and their descendants. \nPerhaps you are one of them.

SUMMARY:‘Caitlin Karolczak: Imitations of Mortality’ at the Satanic Temple
DESCRIPTION:Throughout history\, women have been more commonly recalled as muses than artists. Karolczak lays claim to both\, using both self-portraiture and other imagery in reclamation of identity. Her art practice also exhibits a preoccupation with the male portrait\, examining prevalent notions of fetishization and oft-not-seen vulnerability. Karolczak’s richly layered works combine age-old painting techniques with bold\, contemporary mediums. Featuring countless brushstrokes and translucent layers of pigment combined with uncommonly used mediums such as neon\, enamel and metal leaf\, Karolczak’s work truly stands out in the genre of figurative art. \nCaitlin Karolczak was born on Minnesota’s Iron Range. She attended the University of MN at 16\, where she received a BFA in Fine Arts and a BA in Art History with an emphasis in 19th century medical photography. \nIn addition to painting Karolczak\, pursues installation\, sculpture\, and performance art\, often incorporating objects of biology and antiquity from her personal collection. \nKarolczak has exhibited internationally in Bogotá\, Vancouver\, New York\, Miami\, Minneapolis\, Belgium\, Germany and more. SUMMARY:Salem Celebrates the 4th!
DESCRIPTION:Bring your beach blankets and folding chairs to enjoy the 42-piece Hillyer Festival Orchestra on Derby Wharf at the Salem Maritime National Historic Site for a grand celebration of our nation’s Independence Day. Featuring a Pops concert and fireworks launched over Salem Harbor\, this is a quintessential celebration of the 4th of July. \nNote: Salem Celebrates the Fourth will be held of July 2\, 2022.  \nSchedule of Events  \nLive entertainment on the Main Stage begins at 5:00 p.m. featuring Dis-N-Dat\, a reggae and steel drum band. Formed in 1999 by four-time Grammy nominated Black Uhuru drummer ‘Rangotan and 6 time steel pan champion Sista D\, Dis-N-Dat has a unique sound. Dis-N-Dat incorporates Roots Reggae\, Dance Hall and R&B into a sound all their own by combining the sounds of Jamaica and Trinidad with foundation reggae and the steel pan\, moving audiences all over the U.S. for 20 years. The Salem Jazz and Soul Festival is the sponsor of this opening act\, with the good news that the Jazz and Soul Festival will return this summer to the Salem Common on August 6th as part of the City’s annual Heritage Days celebration. \nAlso at 5:00 p.m. The Kids’ Space tent\, sponsored by Amazon\, will open. This year\, little ones will be able to pick-up individually wrapped crafts to take back to their seats. \nFood tents will be open on site selling hot dogs\, French fries\, fried dough\, kettle corn\, and other fair favorites. \nOpening Ceremonies begin at 7:15 p.m. when Mayor Driscoll and other local dignitaries will lead a parade down historic Derby Wharf accompanied by Salem veterans and the Salem Boy Scouts Color Guards. The National Anthem will be sung by members of the Salem High School’s a cappella group Witch Pitch?. \nImmediately following opening ceremonies Maestro Dirk Hillyer and the Hillyer Festival Orchestra (HFO) will take center stage and perform a program packed with Broadway show tunes\, famous movie themes\, and patriotic music. This year’s featured performer is Helen Hassinger\, a very talented soprano and classically trained violinist. She is a graduate of St. Olaf College (BA Music\, Women’s Studies) in Northfield\, Minnesota and Boston University (MM Vocal Performance). In 2018 Ms. Hassinger received her Certificate in Opera Performance from the Boston University Opera Institute.  A native of Wisconsin\, Ms. Hassinger currently resides in Boston\, Massachusetts. \nIntermission entertainment will showcase the talented singers from Salem High School’s Witch Pitch? a cappella group. \nAt 9:15 p.m.\, Salem ends its Independence Day celebration with a fireworks extravaganza\, accompanied live by the Hillyer Festival Orchestra playing the 1812 Overture and other patriotic tunes throughout the entire fireworks display. \nPlease note the following information for those planning to attend Saturday’s July 2nd celebration in Salem \n\nBe safe. To ensure a safe and fun celebration\, the Salem Police Department will have enhanced security in place on July 2nd. Guests are asked to carry any items in clear plastic bags and be prepared for possible bag checks by uniformed officers.\n\n\nSay something. If you see something\, say something to uniformed police at the celebration. In addition to officers who will be moving throughout the area all evening\, you can also always find officers at the public safety tent\, which will be clearly identifiable on site.  Concerns can also be called into the Salem Police at (978) 744-1212.\n\n\nDerby Wharf access. Police will be monitoring access points into the Derby Wharf area throughout the afternoon and evening. Please plan for additional time to arrive at the wharf for the festivities.\n\n\nRoad closures. Derby Street from Herbert Street to Daniels Street\, and Orange Street and Curtis Street at Essex Street\, will all be closed to traffic from 5:00 pm. until 11:00 p.m.\n\n\nAvoid driving to Derby Wharf. Seek parking downtown in a lot\, the Museum Place Garage on New Liberty Street\, or the South Harbor Garage on Congress Street (www.salemma.gov/parking/pages/parking-rates-locations-hours). There is overflow parking at Shetland Properties on Congress Street or take the commuter rail or Salem Ferry (www.salemferry.com) to avoid anticipated traffic congestion. The last MBTA trains depart Salem station at 10:40 p.m. (southbound) and 10:30 p.m. (northbound/Newburyport Line) and 11:30 p.m. (northbound/Rockport Line)\n\n\nHandicapped parking. There is limited handicap parking at Derby Wharf and in the Immaculate Conception parking lot on Hawthorne Boulevard\, which is first-come first-serve\, and there is a mobility impaired/wheelchair seating section reserved at the beginning of Derby Wharf\, so attendees do not have to traverse the park’s terrain.\n\n\nDon’t bring fireworks. Salem has adopted the maximum fines allowable for both the sale ($1\,000 fine) and use ($200 fine) of fireworks. In addition\, a dedicated police unit will be tasked with enforcing the laws prohibiting the private use of fireworks. Please help ensure a safe July 4th for all and leave the fireworks to the professionals.\n\n\nHarbor access. Recreational boaters and other craft will be restricted from the area around Derby Wharf and the channel in Salem Harbor and the South River for much of the evening. Mariners can call the Harbormaster’s Office at 978-741-0098 or on VHF 16 for emergencies after hours or for more information.\n\nFor more information check www.salemma.gov or call Salem City Hall at 978-745-9595\, ext. 5676.
