SUMMARY:“Arts & Crafts” by History Alive at the Salem Inn
DESCRIPTION:For years\, the Salem Inn has heard reports of spiritual activity in and around their properties. While none of it implies malintent\, both the Inn’s employees and guests are convinced that something–or someone– is trying desperately to communicate. Among these witnesses is local historian Louisa Rogers\, who has experienced the most spiritual activity of all in her residence at the Salem Inn. In the hopes of establishing a connection between these happenings and Salem’s past\, the Salem Inn has called upon Rogers\, Cora Sprague-Fox (a local medium)\, and you to get to the bottom of it. \nJoin the Salem Inn for our first Show & Stay event. \nWe’re proud to collaborate with History Alive\, producers of Salem’s resident acclaimed interactive theatre experience Cry Innocent for almost 20 years. \nBe the first to experience Art & Crafts – the intersection of romance\, art\, witchcraft and scandal brought to life through a brand new interactive theatre experience created exclusively for the Salem Inn. \nThis intriguing journey back in time will explore the very real relationships tribulations and challenges that surrounded some of the city’s earliest settlers played out across in period authentic houses and rooms – with you right in the middle of it all. \nTICKET PRICE\n$40 per person – plus room \nCall or visit saleminn.com to book.

SUMMARY:Awaken: Conjuring Our Tomorrow
DESCRIPTION:Awaken: Conjuring Our Tomorrow is a group exhibition curated by Allison Maria Rodriguez featuring Latina artists exploring climate justice issues in their practice. The works in this exhibition navigate a space in between the mathematical and the fantastical. In the wake of the atrocities that continue to be inflicted upon our earth\, this exhibition suggests that we must harness the power of both science and magic in order to generate the prospect of a collective future. From computer programming to oil painting\, these artists use the mechanics of storytelling and human curiosity to investigate our spiritual (dis)connection to the planet\, to highlight the political implications of our cumulative paralysis\, and to envision the possibility of another tomorrow. \nArtists in the exhibition: Tatiana Arocha\, Krista Caballero\, Nayda Cuevas\, Raquel Fornasaro\, Lina Maria Giraldo\, Dinora Justice\, Evelyn Rydz\, and Ana Maria Velasco \nAllison Maria Rodriguez is a first-generation Cuban-American interdisciplinary artist working predominantly in video installation. She creates immersive experiential spaces that challenge conventional ways of knowing and understanding the world. Her work focuses extensively on climate change\, species extinction and the interconnectivity of existence. Through video\, performance\, digital animation\, photography\, drawing\, collage and installation\, Rodriguez merges and blends mediums to create new pictorial spaces for aesthetic\, emotional and conceptual exploration. \nFebruary 19 – Curator Talk\, 12:30 -1:30 pm\nFebruary 19 – Opening Reception\, 2-4 pm\nFebruary 29 – Community Reception\, 5-7 pm \nThe gallery is open 10 am to 4 pm\, Monday through Friday. SUMMARY:National Parks Movie Night: Water Everywhere
DESCRIPTION:Coming soon to a Visitor Center near you… Following January’s very superlative filled first night\, and February’s focus on Presidential and African American history\, Salem Maritime National Historic Site is proud to present their third month of National Park Service Visitor Center orientation films. This ongoing Free First Friday Film Fest is next scheduled for Friday\, March 6th. Salem Maritime National Historic Site\, partnered with Essex National Heritage Area\, hosts a film series celebrating some of the 419 National Park Service sites in the United States. “For March\, recognizing the ridiculous amount of rain we have gotten this winter\, we want to focus on four parks that are significant and thrive based very differently around water\,” says Chief of Resources Gavin Gardner\, “deep lakes\, desert rivers\, glaciers\, water takes many amazing forms in the National Parks.” Films will be shown in the Salem Armory Visitor Center’s theater (2 New Liberty Street)\, with a matinee at 4:00 PM followed by an evening showing at 7:00 PM. \nThe orientation film is an icon of the National Park Service. It is often the starting point for an exciting visit to our country’s National Parks\, Monuments\, Historic Sites\, and Recreation Areas. “These films offer an introduction to the National Parks with an overview of the nature and history of the park and are usually only show at the sites” says Gardner. “We thought it would be great not only to offer a fun event in the quiet Salem winter months\, but also give people a chance to discover other parks they may want to visit someday.” \nEach month the park will offer a curated series of films on the first Friday of the month. The film series will continue the first Friday of the month through June. Gavin Gardner adds\, “This free roughly two hour program will introduce you to some not so far away wonders and hopefully inspire you to get out there and #FindYourPark!”

SUMMARY:Terra Nova with Oracle Hysterical and Hub New Music
DESCRIPTION:Composer-collective Oracle Hysterical\, with collaborators Hub New Music\, presents the world premiere of an evening-length collection of songs inspired by the expeditions of a wide-ranging group of ambitious\, gritty — and often cruel — myopic explorers. Text comes from the journals of European “New World” explorers like Christopher Columbus\, Hernán Cortés and Hernando de Soto; Puritan women on their new frontier; pilot Amelia Earhart; naturalist John James Audubon; ill-fated Arctic explorer Robert Falcon Scott; the ancient king Gilgamesh and his quest to cheat death; and the Chinese mariner\, treasure seeker and builder of giant ships Zheng He. These authors and subjects\, captivated by unchartered territory\, share an often combustible mix of guts\, ego\, naivete\, greed and unwavering determination. The results of their discoveries range from beautiful to terrifying\, or sometimes both. This dynamic\, semi-staged performance includes lighting design by Mary Ellen Stebbins. \nPart band\, part book club\, Oracle Hysterical combines eclectic musical influences with literary breadth. Hub New Music\, a frequent PEM collaborator\, is a Boston-based quartet ensemble that celebrates the diversity of today’s classical music landscape through creative programming and ambitious commissioning projects. Learn more at oraclehysterical.com and hubnewmusic.org. \n8 pm | Main Atrium\nMembers $20\, nonmembers $30\, students with ID $15\nCash bar and light bites \nTickets available online.
