DESCRIPTION:Jack Butterworth\, the owner of one of the largest collections of comic art in New England\, will share some insider stories behind the two comic book versions of Nathaniel Hawthorne’s novel “The House of Seven Gables” Sunday\, Dec. 1\, at 2 p.m. at the House of Seven Gables. \nA Salem resident\, Butterworth is a former newspaper reporter and former occasional comic book writer as well as a collector. \nHe became a serious comic book enthusiast in 1974 in the exciting days when many of the earliest comic book creators were still alive. He met the surviving co-founder of Classics Illustrated\, Mike Kanter\, and two of its former art directors\, Jerry Iger and L.B. Cole\, and he has stories to share about them all.

DESCRIPTION:Col. Robert Nersasian will recount the harrowing tale of the USS Leopold–the worst combat loss in the history of the US Coast Guard.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nJoin us at the Salem Visitor Center on Saturday\, November 30 at 3pm\, as we commemorate the 75th anniversary of the sinking of the USS Leopold. Col. Robert Nersasian will recount the harrowing tale of this U.S. Coast Guard destroyer that was torpedoed and sank off the coast of Iceland during World War II. There will also be a showing of the documentary “Eye Witnesses of World War II\, USS Leopold”\, courtesy of Mark Munro and Rob Sibley. This 30-minute film covers the sinking of the destroyer and interviews surviving crew members. \nCol. Robert Nersasian is the co-author of Never to Return\, which tells the story of how the crew struggled to survive against all odds. Nersasian’s brother\, Sparky Nersasian\, was a gunner aboard the Leopold and miraculously survived the attack. Tragically\, 171 Coast Guardsmen would lose their lives in this catastrophic event. \nTickets ($10-15) available online.

She sings professionally with Night Shift Entertainment and has had the privilege to sing with winner of “The Voice” Jermaine Paul\, “The Greatest Showman’s\,” Loren Allred\, as well as with the Boston Pops. SUMMARY:Santa’s Arrival and Holiday Tree Lighting
DESCRIPTION:Join Salem Main Streets and the City of Salem as we combine two of our most beloved annual traditions – Santa’s Arrival and the lighting of Salem’s Holiday Tree – into one evening. Santa Claus will arrive at the top of the Hawthorne Hotel (18 Washington Square W) promptly at 6:00 pm on Friday\, Nov. 29\, 2019\, with assistance from the Salem Fire Department\, of course. We recommend arriving to the Salem Common by 5:45 pm to catch the arrival. Bring the whole family out for carols\, festivities\, and fun! \nSanta’s arrival will be followed by a procession down the Essex Street Pedestrian Mall to Lappin Park (next to the Bewitched Statue at the intersection of Essex Street and Washington Street)\, where we will join Santa and Mayor Kimberley Driscoll for the Holiday Tree Lighting. Participants are encouraged to bring lanterns (store-bought or homemade) to carry in the procession. Safety first\, though – electric candles are highly recommended! \nThese festive events also serve as a launch for Small Business Saturday on Nov. 30\, when special discounts\, deals\, and offering (and free parking!) can be found all over downtown. Salem Main Streets is incredibly grateful to all the partners and supporters who help make these special events possible.
