SUMMARY:My Journey to Morocco
DESCRIPTION:Indra Persad Milowe is a Trinidad born visual artist living and working in Salem\, Massachusetts\, U.S.A. Her art brings to life many of her childhood memories of growing up in Trinidad in the 1950’s and 1960’s. \nMy interest is in nature\, still life and design. I adored my St. Augustine Girls High School art teacher\, Mrs. Helga Mohammed from Madrid\, Spain. She was married to a Trinidadian. On my first day in her class at age 12\, written on her blackboard was: “Art is not only a painting hanging up on a wall\, art is in every aspect of your daily life.” These words have stuck in my head ever since. My paintings were chosen for the high school’s yearbook for two consecutive years. At age 15\, I painted from nature\, orchids on a branch. At age 16\, I did a still life\, a display of an apple\, pear\, and a bunch of grapes. Those two paintings and all the incredible reviews that came with them lifted my confidence in my artwork. There is a personal story behind every one of my paintings. I painted every single festival celebrated in Trinidad as well as all the folklore stories that I heard while growing up. \nI retired from general\, ophthalmic and psychiatric nursing in 2019 after having worked in England\, Malta\, Trinidad and the United States. Through British Nurses Overseas\, I was able to work in different countries. Ultimately\, I decided to go back to art during my retirement. I prefer working on canvas with multi-colored and gold acrylic paints.

SUMMARY:‘Caitlin Karolczak: Imitations of Mortality’ at the Satanic Temple
DESCRIPTION:Throughout history\, women have been more commonly recalled as muses than artists. Karolczak lays claim to both\, using both self-portraiture and other imagery in reclamation of identity. Her art practice also exhibits a preoccupation with the male portrait\, examining prevalent notions of fetishization and oft-not-seen vulnerability. Karolczak’s richly layered works combine age-old painting techniques with bold\, contemporary mediums. Featuring countless brushstrokes and translucent layers of pigment combined with uncommonly used mediums such as neon\, enamel and metal leaf\, Karolczak’s work truly stands out in the genre of figurative art. \nCaitlin Karolczak was born on Minnesota’s Iron Range. She attended the University of MN at 16\, where she received a BFA in Fine Arts and a BA in Art History with an emphasis in 19th century medical photography. \nIn addition to painting Karolczak\, pursues installation\, sculpture\, and performance art\, often incorporating objects of biology and antiquity from her personal collection. \nKarolczak has exhibited internationally in Bogotá\, Vancouver\, New York\, Miami\, Minneapolis\, Belgium\, Germany and more. Her work is in numerous collections across the US as well as Australia\, South America\, UK\, Canada\, Israel & South Africa. DESCRIPTION:Salem Maritime National Historic Site announces the installation of Dominican Faceless Dolls\, a bilingual (English/Spanish) exhibit on display May 7 – June 30\, Wednesday – Sunday\, 10 am – 4pm at the Salem Armory Regional Visitor Center\, 2 New Liberty Street in Salem. Co-created with North Shore Community Development Coalition (North Shore CDC)\, the exhibit celebrates Salem’s global connections and Caribbean culture with artwork and stories by residents of the Point neighborhood (also known as El Punto).\n\nDominican Faceless Dolls inspiration stems from a popular handicraft of the Dominican Republic\, Muñecas Limé. These small\, ceramic figures that lack faces symbolize Dominican women\, culture and diversity. “Dominican Faceless Dolls fosters a connection with new and existing audiences to find cultural relevancy at the site specifically with Essex County’s Latinx community\,” said Program Manager of Visitor Experience and Community Engagement\, Susan Russo. \n“We are grateful for this partnership with Salem Maritime\,” said North Shore CDC Chief Executive Officer\, Mickey Northcutt. “The exhibit honors the beautiful cultural significance of the Dominican faceless dolls and people of the Dominican community in Salem.” \n“This exhibition is special because it offers people from all walks of life\, who are either familiar with these dolls or learning about them for the first time\, the opportunity to share their own stories through creative expression”\, said Yinette Guzman\, Design & Placemaking Project Manager at North Shore CDC. “These new works of art continue the tradition of Muñecas Limé and represent the identity and cultural heritage of each artist.” \nThe North Shore CDC selected nineteen paper dolls and three artist stories for Dominican Faceless Dolls. With bios\, poems\, and personalized\, paper dolls\, the exhibit shares Salem stories of migration\, heritage\, and intersecting identities. The co-creators of the exhibit invite visitors to share their own stories on interactive panels with questions centered on discovery of self and community. \nThe National Park Service extends special thanks to the Latino Heritage Internship Program (LHIP). Dominican Faceless Dolls follows a 2021 exhibit proposal and a series of online resources developed by LHIP interns Tahmoor Chadury and Karla Bonilla. Visitors are invited to further explore and make their own faceless\, paper doll by visiting www.nps.gov/articles/000/faceless-dolls.htm.

SUMMARY:My Journey to Morocco
DESCRIPTION:Indra Persad Milowe is a Trinidad born visual artist living and working in Salem\, Massachusetts\, U.S.A. Her art brings to life many of her childhood memories of growing up in Trinidad in the 1950’s and 1960’s. \nMy interest is in nature\, still life and design. I adored my St. Augustine Girls High School art teacher\, Mrs. Helga Mohammed from Madrid\, Spain. She was married to a Trinidadian. On my first day in her class at age 12\, written on her blackboard was: “Art is not only a painting hanging up on a wall\, art is in every aspect of your daily life.” These words have stuck in my head ever since. My paintings were chosen for the high school’s yearbook for two consecutive years. At age 15\, I painted from nature\, orchids on a branch. At age 16\, I did a still life\, a display of an apple\, pear\, and a bunch of grapes. Those two paintings and all the incredible reviews that came with them lifted my confidence in my artwork. There is a personal story behind every one of my paintings. I painted every single festival celebrated in Trinidad as well as all the folklore stories that I heard while growing up. \nI retired from general\, ophthalmic and psychiatric nursing in 2019 after having worked in England\, Malta\, Trinidad and the United States. Through British Nurses Overseas\, I was able to work in different countries. Ultimately\, I decided to go back to art during my retirement. I prefer working on canvas with multi-colored and gold acrylic paints.

DESCRIPTION:Throughout history\, women have been more commonly recalled as muses than artists. Karolczak lays claim to both\, using both self-portraiture and other imagery in reclamation of identity. Her art practice also exhibits a preoccupation with the male portrait\, examining prevalent notions of fetishization and oft-not-seen vulnerability. Karolczak’s richly layered works combine age-old painting techniques with bold\, contemporary mediums. Featuring countless brushstrokes and translucent layers of pigment combined with uncommonly used mediums such as neon\, enamel and metal leaf\, Karolczak’s work truly stands out in the genre of figurative art. \nCaitlin Karolczak was born on Minnesota’s Iron Range. She attended the University of MN at 16\, where she received a BFA in Fine Arts and a BA in Art History with an emphasis in 19th century medical photography. \nIn addition to painting Karolczak\, pursues installation\, sculpture\, and performance art\, often incorporating objects of biology and antiquity from her personal collection. \nKarolczak has exhibited internationally in Bogotá\, Vancouver\, New York\, Miami\, Minneapolis\, Belgium\, Germany and more. Her work is in numerous collections across the US as well as Australia\, South America\, UK\, Canada\, Israel & South Africa.
