SUMMARY:‘Dominican Faceless Dolls’ at Salem Armory Regional Visitor Center
DESCRIPTION:Salem Maritime National Historic Site announces the installation of Dominican Faceless Dolls\, a bilingual (English/Spanish) exhibit on display May 7 – June 30\, Wednesday – Sunday\, 10 am – 4pm at the Salem Armory Regional Visitor Center\, 2 New Liberty Street in Salem. Co-created with North Shore Community Development Coalition (North Shore CDC)\, the exhibit celebrates Salem’s global connections and Caribbean culture with artwork and stories by residents of the Point neighborhood (also known as El Punto).\n\nDominican Faceless Dolls inspiration stems from a popular handicraft of the Dominican Republic\, Muñecas Limé. These small\, ceramic figures that lack faces symbolize Dominican women\, culture and diversity. “Dominican Faceless Dolls fosters a connection with new and existing audiences to find cultural relevancy at the site specifically with Essex County’s Latinx community\,” said Program Manager of Visitor Experience and Community Engagement\, Susan Russo. \n“We are grateful for this partnership with Salem Maritime\,” said North Shore CDC Chief Executive Officer\, Mickey Northcutt. “The exhibit honors the beautiful cultural significance of the Dominican faceless dolls and people of the Dominican community in Salem.” \n“This exhibition is special because it offers people from all walks of life\, who are either familiar with these dolls or learning about them for the first time\, the opportunity to share their own stories through creative expression”\, said Yinette Guzman\, Design & Placemaking Project Manager at North Shore CDC. “These new works of art continue the tradition of Muñecas Limé and represent the identity and cultural heritage of each artist.” \nThe North Shore CDC selected nineteen paper dolls and three artist stories for Dominican Faceless Dolls. With bios\, poems\, and personalized\, paper dolls\, the exhibit shares Salem stories of migration\, heritage\, and intersecting identities. The co-creators of the exhibit invite visitors to share their own stories on interactive panels with questions centered on discovery of self and community. \nThe National Park Service extends special thanks to the Latino Heritage Internship Program (LHIP). Dominican Faceless Dolls follows a 2021 exhibit proposal and a series of online resources developed by LHIP interns Tahmoor Chadury and Karla Bonilla. Visitors are invited to further explore and make their own faceless\, paper doll by visiting www.nps.gov/articles/000/faceless-dolls.htm.

SUMMARY:The Great Animal Orchestra: Bernie Krause and United Visual Artists
DESCRIPTION:The Peabody Essex Museum and the Fondation Cartier pour l’art contemporain are proud to present the North American premiere of The Great Animal Orchestra. \nStep into an immersive audio-visual experience that celebrates our planet’s rich biodiversity. Over the course of nearly fifty years\, Bernie Krause collected more than 5\,000 hours of recordings of natural environments\, including at least 15\,000 terrestrial and marine species from around the world. \nTrained as a musician\, Krause found animal vocalizations in the natural world to be akin to musical harmony and orchestral organization. Krause’s soundscapes reveal that within any ecosystem\, each species has its own acoustic niche and human activities are increasingly silencing these great animal orchestras. United Visual Artists (UVA) worked with Krause to visualize these recordings as animated spectrograms\, which immerse us in the heart of these wild soundscapes. This unique installation makes a plea for preserving the wondrous diversity of the animal world. \nThe Great Animal Orchestra\, a collaboration between Bernie Krause and United Visual Artists\, ws commissioned in 2016 by the Fondation Cartier pour l’art contemporain\, and is now part of its permanent collection. The exhibition is organized by the Peabody Essex Museum and the Fondation Cartier pour l’art contemporain. \nThe exhibition is presented as part of PEM’s Climate + Environment Initiative and is made possible by a generous gift from the Creighton family and the Albert M. Creighton Jr. Fund for Art and Nature. Additional support was provided by Peter and Sandra Lawrence and individuals who support the Exhibition Incubation Fund: Jennifer and Andrew Borggaard\, James B. and Mary Lou Hawkes\, Kate and Ford O’Neil\, and Henry and Callie Brauer. We also recognize the generosity of the East India Marine Associates of the Peabody Essex Museum.

SUMMARY:‘Creatives of Color Boston Blooming Truths’ Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:Creatives of Color BOSTON presents our 2022 exhibition\, “Blooming Truths”. This project asks the question\, “What would the world look like if colonialism never existed\, and BIPOC were given the chance to truly blossom?” In our current climate\, being BIPOC can sometimes feel like we have to make ourselves smaller just to fit into a world that treats us less than equitably. \nBIPOC Artists of various mediums will explore the idea of an alternative future where we aren’t boxed in by the limitations of a post-colonial\, Euro-centric world. It will be an opportunity for artists and viewers alike to give themselves permission to take up space\, and we were inspired to choose this theme because of a discussion that transpired between us and artists in our community. \nFeaturing work from: \n\nAryana Meraj\nJennessa Burks\nJennifer Okumura\nLinda Sok\nLiza Zayas\nMariel Cueto\nNaijah Nine\nOlivia Blaisdell\nSephra Mohammed

SUMMARY:Dr. Chuck Radis: House Calls and Clinic Visits on Maine’s Casco Bay Islands
DESCRIPTION:Our first hybrid program! \nJoin us in the Athenaeum reading room for stories ranging from hilarious to heartbreaking with Dr. Chuck Radis as he relates experiences from his medical practice in Peaks Island\, Maine. \nAfter completing medical school and an internal medicine residency\, young Dr. Radis moved his family to Peaks Island off the coast of Maine to fulfill a scholarship obligation. Absent-minded and oblivious to island mores\, he adapted to a medical practice where x-rays and advanced lab were available only on the mainland. In addition to his clinic duties on Peaks and Chebeague Islands\, he traveled year-round by boat to the outer islands and logged more than 100 yearly house calls. \nIn a career which spans island medicine to rheumatology\, from public health work in a UN refugee settlement to advocacy for Medicare for all\, Dr. Radis’ writings focus on the importance of empathy and kindness in patient care. \nHis first book\, Go by Boat\, and the recently released\, Island Medicine\, have been described as a blend of James Herriot’s All Creatures Great and Small meets Doc Martin. \nTickets: $10 Members; $15 Non-members \nhttps://salemathenaeum.salsalabs.org/051822chuckradis

DESCRIPTION:Throughout history Wolves have been the personification of wonder and power. They represent the untamed spirit and unconquered land. With that reputation they have also been condemned as evil incarnate and\, once murdered\, a symbol of man’s brutal conquest of nature. \nWith this exhibition we aim to explore and promote the majesty of these beautiful creatures whose alluring energy continues to inspire. \nAs a commitment to the preservation of these important animals\, this exhibition is in direct support of Wolf Hollow Conversation and Education Center in Ipswich\, MA\, with our exhibition sales proceeds being donated to Wolf Hollow. Zed Soffron\, Direct of Wolf Hollow\, will also be our juror.

SUMMARY:Beading Workshop
DESCRIPTION:In this workshop you will learn how to make small jewelry items such as earrings out of beads! Beading is so much fun\, and Sadie makes it delightful! Crafting\, re-creating and re-engineering are traits of a creative person. Raising children\, being active in the education system as well leading Girl & Boy Scout troops gave me opportunities to explore art related activities with kids and young adults in the Northern VA area for 30 years. I have always been a resourceful person and in 2010 a different type of challenge called Lyme disease overwhelmed my life. I needed to find a new activity and a trip to the local craft store was in order. I purchased a spool of thread\, 2 tubes of seed beads and a tiny spiral necklace was born. Beads saved my life. They helped me learn to keep focused and not allow unnecessary brain clutter. Beading is a wonderful meditative state of mind. There is seldom a day that passes when I am not without my beautiful glass and stone beads. I have a collection of beads from around the world. France\, Germany and the Czech Republic are my favorite countries to find handmade glass beads and buttons. Porcelain flowers\, Semi precious stones\, agate\, pearls and feathers are on hand. I use quality seed beads\, TOHO or Miyuki Delica for precise woven work. The thread is also produced by Miyuki a 100% nylon beading thread.
