SUMMARY:W O L F D R E A M

SUMMARY:The Great Animal Orchestra: Bernie Krause and United Visual Artists
DESCRIPTION:The Peabody Essex Museum and the Fondation Cartier pour l’art contemporain are proud to present the North American premiere of The Great Animal Orchestra. \nStep into an immersive audio-visual experience that celebrates our planet’s rich biodiversity. Over the course of nearly fifty years\, Bernie Krause collected more than 5\,000 hours of recordings of natural environments\, including at least 15\,000 terrestrial and marine species from around the world. \nTrained as a musician\, Krause found animal vocalizations in the natural world to be akin to musical harmony and orchestral organization. Krause’s soundscapes reveal that within any ecosystem\, each species has its own acoustic niche and human activities are increasingly silencing these great animal orchestras. United Visual Artists (UVA) worked with Krause to visualize these recordings as animated spectrograms\, which immerse us in the heart of these wild soundscapes. This unique installation makes a plea for preserving the wondrous diversity of the animal world. \nThe Great Animal Orchestra\, a collaboration between Bernie Krause and United Visual Artists\, ws commissioned in 2016 by the Fondation Cartier pour l’art contemporain\, and is now part of its permanent collection. The exhibition is organized by the Peabody Essex Museum and the Fondation Cartier pour l’art contemporain. \nThe exhibition is presented as part of PEM’s Climate + Environment Initiative and is made possible by a generous gift from the Creighton family and the Albert M. Creighton Jr. Fund for Art and Nature. Additional support was provided by Peter and Sandra Lawrence and individuals who support the Exhibition Incubation Fund: Jennifer and Andrew Borggaard\, James B. and Mary Lou Hawkes\, Kate and Ford O’Neil\, and Henry and Callie Brauer. We also recognize the generosity of the East India Marine Associates of the Peabody Essex Museum.

SUMMARY:Let None Be Excluded: The Origins of Equal School Rights in Salem
DESCRIPTION:In the 19th-century\, Salem residents celebrated the city’s early public school system for welcoming and educating all children. Despite the system’s success\, the Salem school committee decided in 1834 to establish separate schools for Black children. \nThis sudden decision and its implementation angered Black residents who launched a near-decade long struggle for the educational rights of their children. Their valiant efforts convinced the Salem school committee to abolish racially separate public schools in 1844. Salem was one of the first US municipalities to do so. A decade later\, the Commonwealth of Massachusetts would become the first state to pass a law forbidding school committees from classifying students by race. \nOn view in the James Duncan Phillips Trust Gallery\, this exhibition features documents that capture the impassioned activism of young Black leaders\, including Sarah Parker Remond and Robert Morris. These youth\, as agents in their own education\, sparked the national equal school rights movement by tethering education rights to democracy and racial equality. These Salem voices and their spirited words and actions changed the course of our schools and our nation. \nLet None Be Excluded: The Origins of Equal School Rights in Salem is organized by the Peabody Essex Museum. The exhibition is made possible by the generosity of Carolyn and Peter S. Lynch and The Lynch Foundation. Additional support was provided by individuals who support the Exhibition Incubation Fund: Jennifer and Andrew Borggaard\, James B. and Mary Lou Hawkes\, Kate and Ford O’Neil\, and Henry and Callie Brauer. We also recognize the generosity of the East India Marine Associates of the Peabody Essex Museum. \nFollow along on social media using #PEMLetNone

SUMMARY:Genealogy and Deeds: What Land Records Can Tell Your About Your History
DESCRIPTION:The Southern Essex Registry of Deeds maintains and provides public access to the land records for Southern Essex District and all of Essex County prior to 1869. The Salem Registry has the oldest continuous land records in the country dating back to 1639. Although the Registry only maintains land records\, many older documents contained information on the people who owned the land\, including professions\, family members\, and sometimes wills and estate listings. In addition to deeds and mortgages\, the registry also maintains the Old Norfolk Deed Books\, Ipswich Deed Books\, Books of Executions and Depositions\, historic city and town atlases\, historic assessor maps\, city directories\, and microfilm copies of early probate records. All of which can be helpful when trying to trace history within Essex County.

SUMMARY:Salem Witch Trials Ancestors & Descendants
DESCRIPTION:Salem will be 400 years old in 2026. It is rich in history\, including a critical role in the American Revolution and being the richest seaport per capita from 1790 to 1812. \nAnd then there is the 1692 Witch Trials. There were 156 official complaints and maybe 200 accused\, along with 70 afflicted persons\, nine judges\, dozens of jurors and hundreds who observed the trials. \nCalculations estimate that there could be 100 million descendants from the 1692 Witchcraft Trials. Many descendants know but many don’t know. Most of them have never been in the public eye. However\, many of them are famous and some are infamous. You’ll be surprised. \nThis tour will bring you throughout the downtown area of old Salem Towne and will discuss key people involved in the 1692 Witchcraft Trials and their descendants.\nPerhaps you are one of them.

SUMMARY:Carl Carlsen Presents Brickyard Stories 2.0: A Lynn MA Neighborhood Before and After Urban Renewal
DESCRIPTION:Join us as we welcome Carl Carlsen\, former lecturer at North Shore Community College\, as he presents his most recent work\, “Brickyard Stories 2.0: A Lynn MA Neighborhood Before and After Urban Renewal.” Carlsen taught in Lynn for 37 years\, and over that time saw the numerous changes that took place in the area and with the people. Thinking of all the stories that must exist from residents old and new\, he wanted to record and share them for posterity. Out of this came his first book\, “Brickyard Stories: A Neighborhood and its Traditions” — which was published in 1985 by NSCC. Much has changed since that first book\, so as a follow-up Carlsen wrote “Brickyard Stories 2.0: A Lynn MA Neighborhood Before and After Urban Renewal” which was published in 2021. Carlsen will be sharing images and anecdotes from his research and the book.

SUMMARY:The Struggle for Soviet Jewry and the Making of a Local Emigre Community
DESCRIPTION:Join us for Salem Ancestry Days as we welcome Dan Eshet and Regina Kazyulina to talk about one of the many immigrant communities on the North Shore. Since the end of the 1980s\, more than 10\,000 Jewish refugees from the former Soviet Union have settled in the Greater Boston area. Their arrival represented the culmination of more than two decades of protest across the country aimed at freeing Jews from Soviet persecution and antisemitism. Our talk will examine this group’s history and the human rights campaign waged on their behalf\, while at the same time situating both within the larger story of Jewish migration from Eastern Europe. Dan Eshet is the program director at the Center for Holocaust and Genocide Studies at Salem State University. He has written and lectured extensively on human rights\, modern Jewish history and the Holocaust. Regina Kazyulina is a program research associate at the Center for Holocaust and Genocide Studies at Salem State University. Her work focuses on gender and the lived experiences of Soviet civilians.

DESCRIPTION:Throughout history Wolves have been the personification of wonder and power. They represent the untamed spirit and unconquered land. With that reputation they have also been condemned as evil incarnate and\, once murdered\, a symbol of man’s brutal conquest of nature. \nWith this exhibition we aim to explore and promote the majesty of these beautiful creatures whose alluring energy continues to inspire. \nAs a commitment to the preservation of these important animals\, this exhibition is in direct support of Wolf Hollow Conversation and Education Center in Ipswich\, MA\, with our exhibition sales proceeds being donated to Wolf Hollow. SUMMARY:‘Creatives of Color Boston Blooming Truths’ Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:Creatives of Color BOSTON presents our 2022 exhibition\, “Blooming Truths”. This project asks the question\, “What would the world look like if colonialism never existed\, and BIPOC were given the chance to truly blossom?” In our current climate\, being BIPOC can sometimes feel like we have to make ourselves smaller just to fit into a world that treats us less than equitably. \nBIPOC Artists of various mediums will explore the idea of an alternative future where we aren’t boxed in by the limitations of a post-colonial\, Euro-centric world. It will be an opportunity for artists and viewers alike to give themselves permission to take up space\, and we were inspired to choose this theme because of a discussion that transpired between us and artists in our community. \nFeaturing work from: \n\nAryana Meraj\nJennessa Burks\nJennifer Okumura\nLinda Sok\nLiza Zayas\nMariel Cueto\nNaijah Nine\nOlivia Blaisdell\nSephra Mohammed
