SUMMARY:Researching Black Ancestry in Essex County: Resources & Methods
DESCRIPTION:Join Essex Heritage and a panel of experts to learn about the resources and methods for researching Black ancestry in Essex County. In recent years\, there has been a surge in the number of research projects done to uncover and interpret records and resources that shed light on the Black residents of Essex County from the 17th century to the present. These resources have allowed historians\, genealogists\, and family history researchers to better understand the diverse communities in the region and build a more complete picture of our history. \nYou’ll hear from genealogists\, museum professionals\, and other experts on the work that has been done in recent years to build upon the availability of the records of enslaved and free African Americans\, the process of discovering personal connections to Essex County\, and what resources are accessible to the public. \nFollowing the talk will be a moderated Q&A with the audience.

SUMMARY:Survivor Nest Project Panel Discussion
DESCRIPTION:Join Debbie Baxter\, photographer\, Lisa Kawski\, sound healer\, Donna Jenson\, writer\, Katie Bourgeois\, filmmaker\, and Carla Beatrice\, community art organizer\, discuss the many ways the arts can be used for healing. The panel discussion will take place on the first floor of Old Town Hall in Salem. It is offered through CultureHouse Salem\, a pop-up community space offering programming from April – June. Before or after the panel\, view the Survivor Nest Project exhibition on both floors of Old Town Hall. \nThe Survivor Nest Project is a transformational healing arts project for survivors of incest and childhood sexual abuse. Organized by Carla Beatrice of Survivor Nest\, an interactive exhibit and programming is taking place in April during Child Sexual Abuse Prevention Month and Sexual Assault Awareness Month. A powerful installation by artist Debbie Baxter of The Nest Project includes a giant life sized nest\, nesting portraits of survivors and narratives of the healing they brought into their nesting experiences. Join us in this incredible historic site\, once used for public meetings and gatherings\, as Baxter transforms it into a safe\, nurturing and intimate womb-like environment. \nThis is a free event. Program donations are welcome and are very much appreciated. It takes a community to build a nest and every stick counts! \nFor additional programming and event information\, please go to www.survivornest.com/events \nThis program is supported in part by a grant from the Lynn Cultural Council\, a local agency which is supported by the Massachusetts Cultural Council\, a state agency.

SUMMARY:The Great Animal Orchestra: Bernie Krause and United Visual Artists
DESCRIPTION:The Peabody Essex Museum and the Fondation Cartier pour l’art contemporain are proud to present the North American premiere of The Great Animal Orchestra. \nStep into an immersive audio-visual experience that celebrates our planet’s rich biodiversity. Over the course of nearly fifty years\, Bernie Krause collected more than 5\,000 hours of recordings of natural environments\, including at least 15\,000 terrestrial and marine species from around the world. \nTrained as a musician\, Krause found animal vocalizations in the natural world to be akin to musical harmony and orchestral organization. Krause’s soundscapes reveal that within any ecosystem\, each species has its own acoustic niche and human activities are increasingly silencing these great animal orchestras. United Visual Artists (UVA) worked with Krause to visualize these recordings as animated spectrograms\, which immerse us in the heart of these wild soundscapes. This unique installation makes a plea for preserving the wondrous diversity of the animal world. \nThe Great Animal Orchestra\, a collaboration between Bernie Krause and United Visual Artists\, ws commissioned in 2016 by the Fondation Cartier pour l’art contemporain\, and is now part of its permanent collection. The exhibition is organized by the Peabody Essex Museum and the Fondation Cartier pour l’art contemporain. \nThe exhibition is presented as part of PEM’s Climate + Environment Initiative and is made possible by a generous gift from the Creighton family and the Albert M. Creighton Jr. Fund for Art and Nature. Additional support was provided by Peter and Sandra Lawrence and individuals who support the Exhibition Incubation Fund: Jennifer and Andrew Borggaard\, James B. and Mary Lou Hawkes\, Kate and Ford O’Neil\, and Henry and Callie Brauer. We also recognize the generosity of the East India Marine Associates of the Peabody Essex Museum.

SUMMARY:Let None Be Excluded: The Origins of Equal School Rights in Salem
DESCRIPTION:In the 19th-century\, Salem residents celebrated the city’s early public school system for welcoming and educating all children. Despite the system’s success\, the Salem school committee decided in 1834 to establish separate schools for Black children. \nThis sudden decision and its implementation angered Black residents who launched a near-decade long struggle for the educational rights of their children. Their valiant efforts convinced the Salem school committee to abolish racially separate public schools in 1844. Salem was one of the first US municipalities to do so. A decade later\, the Commonwealth of Massachusetts would become the first state to pass a law forbidding school committees from classifying students by race. \nOn view in the James Duncan Phillips Trust Gallery\, this exhibition features documents that capture the impassioned activism of young Black leaders\, including Sarah Parker Remond and Robert Morris. These youth\, as agents in their own education\, sparked the national equal school rights movement by tethering education rights to democracy and racial equality. These Salem voices and their spirited words and actions changed the course of our schools and our nation. \nLet None Be Excluded: The Origins of Equal School Rights in Salem is organized by the Peabody Essex Museum. The exhibition is made possible by the generosity of Carolyn and Peter S. Lynch and The Lynch Foundation. Additional support was provided by individuals who support the Exhibition Incubation Fund: Jennifer and Andrew Borggaard\, James B. and Mary Lou Hawkes\, Kate and Ford O’Neil\, and Henry and Callie Brauer. We also recognize the generosity of the East India Marine Associates of the Peabody Essex Museum. \nFollow along on social media using #PEMLetNone

SUMMARY:Genealogy and Deeds: What Land Records Can Tell Your About Your History
DESCRIPTION:The Southern Essex Registry of Deeds maintains and provides public access to the land records for Southern Essex District and all of Essex County prior to 1869. The Salem Registry has the oldest continuous land records in the country dating back to 1639. Although the Registry only maintains land records\, many older documents contained information on the people who owned the land\, including professions\, family members\, and sometimes wills and estate listings. In addition to deeds and mortgages\, the registry also maintains the Old Norfolk Deed Books\, Ipswich Deed Books\, Books of Executions and Depositions\, historic city and town atlases\, historic assessor maps\, city directories\, and microfilm copies of early probate records. All of which can be helpful when trying to trace history within Essex County.

SUMMARY:Salem Witch Trials Ancestors & Descendants
DESCRIPTION:Salem will be 400 years old in 2026. It is rich in history\, including a critical role in the American Revolution and being the richest seaport per capita from 1790 to 1812. \nAnd then there is the 1692 Witch Trials. There were 156 official complaints and maybe 200 accused\, along with 70 afflicted persons\, nine judges\, dozens of jurors and hundreds who observed the trials. \nCalculations estimate that there could be 100 million descendants from the 1692 Witchcraft Trials. Many descendants know but many don’t know. Most of them have never been in the public eye. However\, many of them are famous and some are infamous. You’ll be surprised. \nThis tour will bring you throughout the downtown area of old Salem Towne and will discuss key people involved in the 1692 Witchcraft Trials and their descendants.\nPerhaps you are one of them.
