SUMMARY:Virtual Tarot Salon
DESCRIPTION:Brought into being in 2016 and meeting every last Tuesday of the month since\, Tarot Salon is a fun\, exploratory-driven space for anyone interested in learning the Tarot while connecting with others. The theme of each Tarot Salon is inspired by one of Tarot’s 78 cards and offers hands-on opportunities to practice giving and receiving readings using original spreads based on the card for that month. We’re working our way through the entire deck\, one card/ month at a time! Read about our session with The Emperor here. \nCo-hosts Zhana Levitsky and Melissa Nierman provide the overall structure\, which includes a guided meditation\, a talk about that month’s card\, short one-on-one partner readings in break out rooms\, and a longer community reading where you read within a small group. \nAll are welcome\, whether you’ve been reading Tarot for 20 years or it’s your first time! \nPlease have a Tarot deck and a notebook on hand \nNote to groups: if you’re attending with others\, each person should purchase their own ticket. Unless you want to read only with each other\, it works best to have your own screen \n**Please email hello@hauswitch.com for information about sponsored tickets for Black and/or Indigenous folx or otherwise self-identifying POC**

SUMMARY:The Great Animal Orchestra: Bernie Krause and United Visual Artists
DESCRIPTION:The Peabody Essex Museum and the Fondation Cartier pour l’art contemporain are proud to present the North American premiere of The Great Animal Orchestra. \nStep into an immersive audio-visual experience that celebrates our planet’s rich biodiversity. Over the course of nearly fifty years\, Bernie Krause collected more than 5\,000 hours of recordings of natural environments\, including at least 15\,000 terrestrial and marine species from around the world. \nTrained as a musician\, Krause found animal vocalizations in the natural world to be akin to musical harmony and orchestral organization. Krause’s soundscapes reveal that within any ecosystem\, each species has its own acoustic niche and human activities are increasingly silencing these great animal orchestras. United Visual Artists (UVA) worked with Krause to visualize these recordings as animated spectrograms\, which immerse us in the heart of these wild soundscapes. This unique installation makes a plea for preserving the wondrous diversity of the animal world. \nThe Great Animal Orchestra\, a collaboration between Bernie Krause and United Visual Artists\, ws commissioned in 2016 by the Fondation Cartier pour l’art contemporain\, and is now part of its permanent collection. The exhibition is organized by the Peabody Essex Museum and the Fondation Cartier pour l’art contemporain. \nThe exhibition is presented as part of PEM’s Climate + Environment Initiative and is made possible by a generous gift from the Creighton family and the Albert M. Creighton Jr. Fund for Art and Nature. Additional support was provided by Peter and Sandra Lawrence and individuals who support the Exhibition Incubation Fund: Jennifer and Andrew Borggaard\, James B. and Mary Lou Hawkes\, Kate and Ford O’Neil\, and Henry and Callie Brauer. We also recognize the generosity of the East India Marine Associates of the Peabody Essex Museum.

SUMMARY:Let None Be Excluded: The Origins of Equal School Rights in Salem
DESCRIPTION:In the 19th-century\, Salem residents celebrated the city’s early public school system for welcoming and educating all children. Despite the system’s success\, the Salem school committee decided in 1834 to establish separate schools for Black children. \nThis sudden decision and its implementation angered Black residents who launched a near-decade long struggle for the educational rights of their children. Their valiant efforts convinced the Salem school committee to abolish racially separate public schools in 1844. Salem was one of the first US municipalities to do so. A decade later\, the Commonwealth of Massachusetts would become the first state to pass a law forbidding school committees from classifying students by race. \nOn view in the James Duncan Phillips Trust Gallery\, this exhibition features documents that capture the impassioned activism of young Black leaders\, including Sarah Parker Remond and Robert Morris. These youth\, as agents in their own education\, sparked the national equal school rights movement by tethering education rights to democracy and racial equality. These Salem voices and their spirited words and actions changed the course of our schools and our nation. \nLet None Be Excluded: The Origins of Equal School Rights in Salem is organized by the Peabody Essex Museum. The exhibition is made possible by the generosity of Carolyn and Peter S. Lynch and The Lynch Foundation. Additional support was provided by individuals who support the Exhibition Incubation Fund: Jennifer and Andrew Borggaard\, James B. and Mary Lou Hawkes\, Kate and Ford O’Neil\, and Henry and Callie Brauer. We also recognize the generosity of the East India Marine Associates of the Peabody Essex Museum. \nFollow along on social media using #PEMLetNone

SUMMARY:Salem Witch Trials Ancestors & Descendants
DESCRIPTION:Salem will be 400 years old in 2026. It is rich in history\, including a critical role in the American Revolution and being the richest seaport per capita from 1790 to 1812. \nAnd then there is the 1692 Witch Trials. There were 156 official complaints and maybe 200 accused\, along with 70 afflicted persons\, nine judges\, dozens of jurors and hundreds who observed the trials. \nCalculations estimate that there could be 100 million descendants from the 1692 Witchcraft Trials. Many descendants know but many don’t know. Most of them have never been in the public eye. However\, many of them are famous and some are infamous. You’ll be surprised. \nThis tour will bring you throughout the downtown area of old Salem Towne and will discuss key people involved in the 1692 Witchcraft Trials and their descendants.\nPerhaps you are one of them.
