SUMMARY:The Great Animal Orchestra: Bernie Krause and United Visual Artists
DESCRIPTION:The Peabody Essex Museum and the Fondation Cartier pour l’art contemporain are proud to present the North American premiere of The Great Animal Orchestra. \nStep into an immersive audio-visual experience that celebrates our planet’s rich biodiversity. Over the course of nearly fifty years\, Bernie Krause collected more than 5\,000 hours of recordings of natural environments\, including at least 15\,000 terrestrial and marine species from around the world. \nTrained as a musician\, Krause found animal vocalizations in the natural world to be akin to musical harmony and orchestral organization. Krause’s soundscapes reveal that within any ecosystem\, each species has its own acoustic niche and human activities are increasingly silencing these great animal orchestras. United Visual Artists (UVA) worked with Krause to visualize these recordings as animated spectrograms\, which immerse us in the heart of these wild soundscapes. This unique installation makes a plea for preserving the wondrous diversity of the animal world. \nThe Great Animal Orchestra\, a collaboration between Bernie Krause and United Visual Artists\, ws commissioned in 2016 by the Fondation Cartier pour l’art contemporain\, and is now part of its permanent collection. The exhibition is organized by the Peabody Essex Museum and the Fondation Cartier pour l’art contemporain. \nThe exhibition is presented as part of PEM’s Climate + Environment Initiative and is made possible by a generous gift from the Creighton family and the Albert M. Creighton Jr. Fund for Art and Nature. Additional support was provided by Peter and Sandra Lawrence and individuals who support the Exhibition Incubation Fund: Jennifer and Andrew Borggaard\, James B. and Mary Lou Hawkes\, Kate and Ford O’Neil\, and Henry and Callie Brauer. We also recognize the generosity of the East India Marine Associates of the Peabody Essex Museum.

SUMMARY:Salem Sound Coastwatch Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:Are you a visual learner who loves STEM and the ocean? Join us by participating in an environmental science exhibit that features an Augmented Reality (AR) Sandtable. Kids and adults can participate by molding the sand to see what happens in the watershed when it rains\, floods or when landforms change! This AR technology uses sensors\, projection\, and participants’ hands to depict water cycles and changes in sea level. This 3D\, interactive experience is perfect for learning about how water moves across the land\, what a watershed is and how you can contribute to its ecological health. Salem Sound Coastwatch (SSCW) staff and volunteers will guide you during this hands-on learning experience. SSCW is an environmental nonprofit with an ongoing mission to protect and restore the ecological health of Salem Sound and its watershed. Our science-based initiatives include marine education\, field research\, municipal guidance\, community engagement\, and much more. We are dedicated to Salem Sound watershed communities and strive to create diverse\, inclusive and accessible place-based\, environmental education across the North Shore. Come celebrate Earth Day with us!

SUMMARY:Book Group: ‘The Crucible’
DESCRIPTION:Join your neighbors for a book group discussion of Arthur Miller’s classic play The Crucible\, a fictionalized account of the 1692 Salem Witch Hysteria. Written in 1953 after spending days in Salem reading trial documents\, Miller was convinced that the persecution of innocent neighbors in seventeenth-century Salem had an important message for Americans during the McCarthy era. The play focuses on the courage of those who refused to plead guilty to witchcraft\, such as Rebecca Nurse and John Proctor. Facilitated by licensed city guide and former professor Rebecca Johnson\, we’ll explore why the play continues to be relevant today.

SUMMARY:Community Conversations: Understanding Racism and the Journey of the Race Equity Task Force
DESCRIPTION:This month’s Community Conversation will do similar work to March’s interactive dialog of understanding the phenomenon of racism and the strategies to address it. Prior to starting the journey of examining race equity in the City of Salem\, it was important for the Race Equity Task Force to come to an understanding of what racism is. Learning sessions\, like the March Community Conversation and tonight’s dialogue\, were the springboard for our work on the Race Equity Task Force. You do not have to have attended March’s Community Conversation to attend this conversation.
