SUMMARY:Summer Salon: Thomas Vander Salm—Maaijke
DESCRIPTION:Athenaeum member Thomas Vander Salm will discuss his recently published novel\, Maaijke. \nMaaijke\, a young Dutch woman\, born in 1815 in Spakenburg\, vividly imagines herself into other places and times\, but when her concentration lapses\, she is back home. On one of her travels\, she falls in love with Peter\, a U.S. Navy pilot and Vietnam veteran. After an intense but brief affair\, her focus flags and Peter\, unaware of her abilities and why she disappeared\, mourns her absence. She appears more than once in this story of imagination that spans generations. Come to this salon to learn more! \nAfter his early schooling was in Michigan\, Thomas Vander Salm graduated from Carnegie Tech (now Carnegie Mellon) as a chemical engineer. Switching career direction\, he entered the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine and after residency at the Massachussetts General Hospital in Boston\, and two years in the Navy\, he practiced and taught cardiac and thoracic surgery at the University of Massachusetts Medical School. There his writing was focused on surgical topics. His published works include four books\, chapters in 12 other books\, and over 100 scientific\, peer-reviewed papers. It wasn’t until after retiring that he began to write Maaijke.

All skill levels are welcome! This two-hour session includes a 30-minute beginner sketch lesson. All you need to bring is a sketchbook\, pencils and an eraser. We encourage you to bring a folding chair and sunscreen as this program is outdoors. Please note: watercolors\, pastels\, oils\, or acrylics are not permitted on the Museum grounds. \n\nAttendees who wish to tour Hammond Castle Museum after this class are entitled to a 20% discount on a self-guided tour. Tour tickets may be purchased in the Museum Shop before 3:00 p.m. on the day of this class\nAbout Sue Wheeler: Sue Wheeler has a lifetime of making art through various mediums from delectable pastries to abstracts in pastels\, watercolor\, and acrylics. She enjoys using her creative flair in quilting and interior design as well. In early 2019\, Sue opened her own gallery and studio\, Arts Abound in Magnolia Village\, MA as an artistic haven for local artists. Through the gallery\, over 30 artists featured their creative works ranging from paintings\, hand-painted silk scarves\, silver jewelry\, and more. Sue also ran many workshops and classes featuring many of the artists.

We’ll learn to paddle through exploring the beautiful coastline along Salem and while playing fun paddle games like Tsunami and Piano keys! \nSign up for as many sessions as you’d like! \n\nMondays and Wednesdays\, 12:30-1:30; Saturdays 9:30-10:30\nMeet at Coast to Coast Paddle Salem Willows Kiosk\nAges 6-12\n10 kids max per session\n1:5 instructor:kid ratio\nLife jackets will be provided\, though paddlers may bring their own Coast Guard approved life jackets if they’d like.\nPaddlers must be comfortable swimming in the ocean.\nProgram takes place in an ocean environment. Paddlers will be in water over their heads at times\, and life jackets will be worn at all times.

Along the way\, we’ll capture rainbow wishes and let our imaginations soar. \nJoin us on this whimsical journey\, where believing in unicorns and in yourself can lead to the most magical discoveries. Together\, we’ll show that dreams can come true if we just believe!
