It is also the demanding art of training a predatory bird that is by nature wary of people to hunt cooperatively with a human partner. While the sport has a 4\,000-year history\, its glory days were indisputably the medieval period. \n\nWhile this hour-long program centers around live birds used in falconry\, it is not a flight demonstration but a history-rich look at an ancient sport. Focusing on the medieval period\, it explains the characteristics of the birds of prey used\, how the sport reflected the lifestyle of the time and the historical reasons behind falconry’s rise and fall.\n\nThis ticket grants you access to the Falconry & the Medieval World: A Live Bird Presentation which will be held in a tent on the ocean-facing lawn as well as access to the Museum Shop. A separate tour ticket will be required to enter beyond the Museum Shop for a guided or self-guided tour. If you wish to tour Hammond Castle Museum at the conclusion of this program\, ticket holders may purchase Self-Guided Tour tickets in the Museum Shop at a 20% discount.  All proceeds from this educational program support additional educational programs and ongoing Museum restorations.

DESCRIPTION:Join us for the Salem Merry-time Fest from noon to 7pm on Saturday\, August 19\, 2023\, at Salem Maritime National Historic Site on Derby Street. This event is free and open to the public. This one-day festival marks a return of the park’s annual summer event.  In previous years\, Salem Maritime held the “Salem Maritime Festival” at the park each summer. Following state and local guidance\, the festival was canceled in 2020 and remained on hiatus throughout the COVID-19 pandemic.  \n  \nThis year\, the Salem Merry-time Fest will feature a wide range of entertainment\, including musicians\, magic\, visiting vessels\, and hands-on activities. This year’s event will also introduce the first “Great Salem Maritime Cardboard Boat Regatta.” Teams of two will test their ingenuity by building homemade cardboard boats that will launch from Derby Beach.
