While this put Hammond at odds with the rest of the inhabitants of the castle – including his wife Irene – he concluded that working throughout the night and sleeping during the day positively impacted his work as an inventor.\n\nWith this in mind\, “Candlelight tours” are offered Thursday evenings in August and September and offer you the chance to see the building as Hammond so often did; after dark. During these approximately 55-minute fully-guided tours\, you will be escorted throughout many of the Museum’s galleries\, including rooms in the Hammond residence which are not usually a part of the daytime guided experience. The Candlelit tour places an emphasis on the Castle’s role as John and Irene Hammond’s private home\, in addition to covering more general architectural and historical details of the building and collection. Don’t miss this rare opportunity to see the Castle through Hammond’s eyes! \nCarry-In/Carry-Out Picnics: Guests may enjoy a carry-in/carry-out picnic on our seaside lawn before their tour on Thursday evenings in August! While most of these wild stories can be dismissed as pure fiction\, the building occupies a fascinating place within the broader historical context of the development of spiritualist and spiritualist-adjacent fields in American culture. The spiritualist movement enthralled America’s upper and middle classes during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Both John Hays Hammond Jr. and his wife\, Irene\, were fascinated with wide-ranging topics including Astrology\, Divination\, Numerology\, Extrasensory Perception (ESP)\, and Mediumship. \nEvery Thursday evening in August\, September\, and October (and even a couple of Wednesday nights in October too) we offer Spiritualism Tours\, This specialty tour explores the history of American spiritualism\, with a particular focus on contextualizing the movement within broader contemporary cultural trends and discussing the Hammonds’ own complicated engagements with these cultural phenomena. This year’s Community Conversations series will focus on some of these impacts\, existing and proposed efforts to mitigate the negative changes\, and what we can do as individuals to address climate change in our communities. Join the Gables as we host Bill Golden aboard The Schooner Fame as we tour the harbor and discuss the existential threat to coastal communities of storm surge\, sea level rise and storm water caused by melting glaciers and the increased destructive capability of storms. This discussion will focus on scientific data\, available coastal resiliency options\, public policy development and political will. We will also discuss the impacts on real estate\, insurance and municipal tax base and what other regions in the United States and the world are doing to address climate change related flooding. Space is limited and registration is required. If cost is a barrier\, please contact Zoe Quinn at zquinn@7gables.org. \nBill Golden is currently an adjunct full professor at the school of Marine and Atmospheric Sciences SUNY Stony Brook\, a Member of the executive committee of the New York New Jersey Storm Surge Working Group and Manager of the Boston Harbor Regional Storm Surge Working Group. Bill has worked on environmental issues at every level of government from the White House to City Hall. Bill filed the lawsuit to clean up Boston Harbor that created the MWRA and\, as a Massachusetts State Senator\, sponsored environmental legislation\, championed the establishment and expansion of commuter rail and ferry service and served as the chair of a statewide successful solid waste referendum. Bill has also owned renewable energy businesses in Nevada and Oregon and an international environmental services business out of Jakarta Indonesia. Bill is the Director and Co-founder of Real Pirates Salem\, named “Best New Attraction” in Yankee’s 2023 Best in New England Travel Guide. If you wish to tour the museum at the conclusion of this program\, ticket holders may purchase Self-Guided Tour tickets in the Museum Shop at a 20% discount.
