For those two days\, National Park Service staff at Salem Maritime National Historic Site and scores of living history volunteers will host a series of events at the Derby Wharf (160 Derby Street) to commemorate the 250th anniversary of the arrival of British General Thomas Gage in Salem. \nThe commemoration – which also recognizes the temporary relocation of the Massachusetts capital to Salem – will be highlighted by a weekend-long\, historically accurate encampment of some of New England’s finest living history practitioners portraying soldiers\, officers\, and legislators\, as well as the loyalist and patriot citizens of Salem. Join us for a special June double feature of delightful films from the 1970s that celebrate the historic legacy of LGBT Pride month at Hammond Castle Museum! \nDid you know that Hammond Castle Museum was once the shooting location for a major Hollywood motion picture? Join Emmy\, Grammy\, Oscar and Tony award-winner  Liza Minnelli\, alongside Ken Howard\, and Robert Moore\, first director of the ground-breaking 1968 Queer play The Boys in the Band\, in Tell Me That You Love Me Junie Moon\, Director Otto Preminger’s 1970 adaptation of Marjorie Kellogg’s novel of the same name. An episodic story about social outcasts\, one of whom (played by Moore) is an out gay man in a wheelchair\, coming together as part of an unlikely found family\, one of the film’s major sequences takes place across several locations both inside and outside of Hammond Castle Museum. See some of these scenes in the very room in which they were shot 55 years ago!  \nThen\, take a trip from Hammond Castle Museum to the castle of the Mad Scientist Dr. Frank-N-Furter in the cult 1974 hit The Rocky Horror Picture Show. Join actors Tim Curry\, Susan Sarandon and Barry Bostwick in Jim Sharman’s legendarily campy adaptation of Richard O’Brien stage musical send-up of Hammer Films and other kitsch science fiction and horror schlock. Come up to the lab and see what films are on the slab. We hope to see you shiver with antici- \nPlease Note: Screenings of The Rocky Horror Picture Show often allow audiences to bring an array of accessories to enhance their experience\, including toast\, rice\, water guns\, confetti\, rolls of toilet paper\, and newspapers for the iconic audience participation moments. While the Museum hopes that all visitors will find this double feature an exciting and engaging experience\, we are first and foremost a nonprofit educational institution open daily to the public with a vast collection of unique and fragile historical artifacts on display. As a result\, these items will not be allowed into the Museum during this screening. We appreciate your cooperation and understanding in helping us to ensure the safety of our collection. The Museum both allows and encourages cosplay for this event! \n           -pation \n  \nThis program is exclusively for individuals 17 years and older\, unless accompanied by a parent or adult guardian\, no visitors under 13 years of age will be admitted. SUMMARY:“Tea’s Party: From Boston to Salem and Back Again” – Author Talk at Salem Maritime National Historic Site
DESCRIPTION:Salem Maritime National Historic Site will be hosting historian James Fichter for “Tea’s Party: From Boston to Salem and Back Again” a special talk on the importance of tea leading up to the American Revolution. This free talk with be hosted at the Salem Armory Regional Visitor Center (2 New Liberty Street\, Salem) on Thursday\, June 13 at 7 p.m.\n\nIn this talk Fichter reveals that despite the so-called Boston Tea Party of 1773\, large shipments of tea from the East India Company were sold in North America\, one of them in Boston! The survival of the Boston tea shaped Massachusetts politics in 1774\, impeded efforts to reimburse the Company for its losses in Boston Harbor\, and hinted at the enduring conflict between consumer demand and revolutionary boycotts. That tension was not confined to Boston. As General Gage and the colonial government relocated to Salem in the summer of 1774\, Essex County residents found committing to a boycott just as difficult as Bostonians had.\n\nJames Fichter is an historian and Associate Professor in Global and Area Studies at the University of Hong Kong\, where he teaches on maritime history and the revolutionary Atlantic. He is the author of Tea: Consumption\, Politics\, and Revolution\, 1773–1776 (Cornell University Press\, 2023) and So Great a Profit: How the East Indies Transformed Anglo-American Capitalism (Harvard\, 2010) which examines Salem’s trade to China. He received his Ph.D. in history from Harvard in 2006.\n\nAn introduction to the talk will be offered by Emily Murphy\, curator for Salem Maritime and Saugus Iron Works National Historic Sites.
