DESCRIPTION:Explore the fungi of Great Misery Island. \nJoin us for a guided mushroom walk for all those interested in discovering fungi growing on the Misery Island of the coast of Beverly/Salem. This unique island environment hosts conifer and hardwood trees that provide background to growing fungi. Fungi don’t stop there. Animals nesting and living on this island contribute in a major way to fungi/lichens growth on stone ruins of the island. Join us on an exploratory walk around the island with Jana Harris of Essex Forays\, certified in Wild Mushroom Food Safety and member of Boston Mycological Club. Jana will ID mushrooms as we go and learn about edible and nonedible species. Walk will last about 2 1/2hr and will give participants a chance to look close up at mushroom species that thrive in this secluded environment. Depending on weather there will be different types of mushrooms to explore. Please wear sturdy shoes\, long pants\, garden gloves (poison ivy is here)\, bring a water bottle\, tick and bug repellent\, ID field guide and basket (optional). While this put Hammond at odds with the rest of the inhabitants of the castle – including his wife Irene – he concluded that working throughout the night and sleeping during the day positively impacted his work as an inventor.\n\nWith this in mind\, “Candlelight tours” are offered Thursday evenings in August and September and offer you the chance to see the building as Hammond so often did; after dark. During these approximately 55-minute fully-guided tours\, you will be escorted throughout many of the Museum’s galleries\, including rooms in the Hammond residence which are not usually a part of the daytime guided experience. The Candlelit tour places an emphasis on the Castle’s role as John and Irene Hammond’s private home\, in addition to covering more general architectural and historical details of the building and collection. Don’t miss this rare opportunity to see the Castle through Hammond’s eyes! \nCarry-In/Carry-Out Picnics: Guests may enjoy a carry-in/carry-out picnic on our seaside lawn before their tour on Thursday evenings in August! Reservations are $5 per party and start one hour prior to your ticketed evening tour. Reservations are required in advance.  Hammond Castle Museum members enjoy complimentary picnic reservations.

DESCRIPTION:Since its completion in 1929\, Hammond Castle Museum has attracted rumors and urban legends of supernatural associations and occult happening. While most of these wild stories can be dismissed as pure fiction\, the building occupies a fascinating place within the broader historical context of the development of spiritualist and spiritualist-adjacent fields in American culture. The spiritualist movement enthralled America’s upper and middle classes during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Both John Hays Hammond Jr. and his wife\, Irene\, were fascinated with wide-ranging topics including Astrology\, Divination\, Numerology\, Extrasensory Perception (ESP)\, and Mediumship. \nEvery Thursday evening in August\, September\, and October (and even a couple of Wednesday nights in October too) we offer Spiritualism Tours\, This specialty tour explores the history of American spiritualism\, with a particular focus on contextualizing the movement within broader contemporary cultural trends and discussing the Hammonds’ own complicated engagements with these cultural phenomena. We encourage little ones to dress up in their favorite crown\, gown or anything else that makes them happy!\n\nThis ticket grants you access to the Bubbles & Books program which will be held on the ocean-facing lawn. If you wish to tour the museum at the conclusion of this program\, ticket holders may purchase Self-Guided Tour tickets in the Museum Shop at a 20% discount. All proceeds from this program will support the restoration and preservation of the museum.
