DESCRIPTION:This event is a SALEM NIGHT with free admission for Salem residents with ID at the door.  \nIzumonookunI is a multidisciplinary dance inspired by Izumo no Okuni\, 17th century cis-female founder of the Japanese dance-drama form\, kabuki—a form that currently contains little trace of its cis-femalecentric\, grassroots\, counter-cultural origins. Choreographer Aretha Aoki and Bessie-nominated sound designer and artist Ryan MacDonald are resurrecting and re-imagining Okuni as a punk/synthwave/glam-goth figure. IzumokookunI aims to reclaim the origins of kabuki\, collapse reductive binaries\, and allow audiences to make new connections between seemingly disparate forms. \nThis event includes a Q and A with the artists after the performance. \nTickets are $15 general/$10 seniors/free for all students with ID and under 18.\nAll Salem State faculty and staff admitted free with university ID.

DESCRIPTION:Tours are offered at 6\, 7 & 8 p.m. \nMember benefits apply to Candlelight Tour tickets.\nAll proceeds from this program will support the restoration and preservation of the Museum. \nFollowing the advice of his mentor Alexander Graham Bell\, John Hays Hammond Jr. conducted the majority of his work in the evening. While this put Hammond at odds with the rest of the inhabitants of the castle – including his wife Irene – he concluded that working throughout the night and sleeping during the day positively impacted his work as an inventor.\n\nWith this in mind\, “Candlelight tours” are offered Thursday evenings in August and September and offer you the chance to see the building as Hammond so often did; after dark. During these approximately 55-minute fully-guided tours\, you will be escorted throughout many of the Museum’s galleries\, including rooms in the Hammond residence which are not usually a part of the daytime guided experience. The Candlelit tour places an emphasis on the Castle’s role as John and Irene Hammond’s private home\, in addition to covering more general architectural and historical details of the building and collection. Don’t miss this rare opportunity to see the Castle through Hammond’s eyes! \nCarry-In/Carry-Out Picnics: Guests may enjoy a carry-in/carry-out picnic on our seaside lawn before their tour on Thursday evenings in August! Reservations are $5 per party and start one hour prior to your ticketed evening tour. Reservations are required in advance.  Hammond Castle Museum members enjoy complimentary picnic reservations.

DESCRIPTION:Since its completion in 1929\, Hammond Castle Museum has attracted rumors and urban legends of supernatural associations and occult happening. While most of these wild stories can be dismissed as pure fiction\, the building occupies a fascinating place within the broader historical context of the development of spiritualist and spiritualist-adjacent fields in American culture. The spiritualist movement enthralled America’s upper and middle classes during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Both John Hays Hammond Jr. and his wife\, Irene\, were fascinated with wide-ranging topics including Astrology\, Divination\, Numerology\, Extrasensory Perception (ESP)\, and Mediumship. \nEvery Thursday evening in August\, September\, and October (and even a couple of Wednesday nights in October too) we offer Spiritualism Tours\, This specialty tour explores the history of American spiritualism\, with a particular focus on contextualizing the movement within broader contemporary cultural trends and discussing the Hammonds’ own complicated engagements with these cultural phenomena. From John Hays Hammond Jr.’s attempts to communicate with supernatural entities using a Faraday Cage\, to Irene Hammond’s work on a comprehensive survey of astrological signs; over the course of this approximately 55-minute fully-guided tour\, the dramatic gothic-inspired architecture of the building and night-time atmosphere will set the stage for a fun and informative seasonal experience unlike any other! \nCarry-In/Carry-Out Picnics: Guests may enjoy a carry-in/carry-out picnic on our seaside lawn before their tour on Thursday evenings in August!
