DESCRIPTION:Join Essex Heritage for a five-part series exploring the principles behind the design and construction of traditional wooden boats. Participants will have the opportunity to experience hands-on practices at several traditional boatyards within the Essex National Heritage Area. \nEach hands-on individual workshop session is $75 per person \n\nSaturday\, February 29: Harold Burnham & Justin Demetri\n\nSaturday\, March 28th: Building the Schooner\n\n\nSaturday\, April 25th: The “Haul Out”\n\n\nSaturday\, May 9th: Rigging a Tall Ship\n\n\nSaturday\, May 23rd: Building The Dory\n\n\nOptional activities for each session will be $20 and available for purchase on-site the day of the session. \nTickets to all five sessions are available for a special package price of $250 please email Ryanc@essexheritage.org or call (978) 740-0444 for ticketing or for more information.

DESCRIPTION:Join us for a virtual book talk with historian\, Dr. Kellie Carter Jackson*\, author of “Force & Freedom: Black Abolitionists and the Politics of Violence” (UPenn Press 2019). \nFree and open to the public. From 11 AM to 12 PM\, Dr. Carter Jackson will introduce her research and answer audience questions. Afterwards\, participants are invited to stay on the call to engage in a book club discussion of Force & Freedom\, from 12:15 to 1 PM. \nWe encourage participants to submit any questions for Dr. Carter Jackson beforehand by emailing nora_halloran@nps.gov \nAll are welcome\, having read the book or not! Join us to learn and explore the connections between historical and contemporary struggles for social justice. If you can’t join us for the entire program we understand!
