DESCRIPTION:Classes are offered from 10:15 am to 12:15 pm on\nFrom stick figure doodlers to first-rate talents\, join us for a seaside\, Plein Air sketch class with Sue Wheeler of Arts Abound in Magnolia. All skill levels are welcome! This two-hour session includes a 30-minute beginner sketch lesson. All you need to bring is a sketchbook\, pencils and an eraser. We encourage you to bring a folding chair and sunscreen as this program is outdoors. Please note: watercolors\, pastels\, oils\, or acrylics are not permitted on the Museum grounds. \n\nAttendees who wish to tour Hammond Castle Museum after this class are entitled to a 20% discount on a self-guided tour. Tour tickets may be purchased in the Museum Shop before 3:00 p.m. on the day of this class\nAbout Sue Wheeler: Sue Wheeler has a lifetime of making art through various mediums from delectable pastries to abstracts in pastels\, watercolor\, and acrylics. She enjoys using her creative flair in quilting and interior design as well. In early 2019\, Sue opened her own gallery and studio\, Arts Abound in Magnolia Village\, MA as an artistic haven for local artists. Through the gallery\, over 30 artists featured their creative works ranging from paintings\, hand-painted silk scarves\, silver jewelry\, and more. Sue also ran many workshops and classes featuring many of the artists.

DESCRIPTION:Inspired by PEM – Our Time on Earth:  Our 18th Annual PEM Inspirational Exhibition invites artists to take inspiration from the PEM exhibition “Our Time on Earth\, on view at the Peabody Essex Museum through June 9\, 2024.  From the PEM\, “Part of PEM’s Climate + Environment Initiative\, this traveling exhibition from the Barbican Centre in London celebrates the power of global creativity to transform the conversation around the climate emergency.” \n\nReception: Friday\, April 12\, 2024\, 6:00-8:00 PM\nExhibition Dates: April 13 – May 18\, 2024\n\nWe challenged our artists to really consider the materials used in pieces created for this exhibit – think about the environmental and climate impacts we make when we create our arts\, and ways that we can lift the conversation around climate change and collapse.  \n“This exhibition invites us to imagine ways that art\, design and science together can help us envision a positive future for our planet\,” said Jane Winchell\, the Sarah Fraser Robbins Director of PEM’s Dotty Brown Art & Nature Center. \nLocal artists submitted artwork for this exhibition that explores the themes of our harmonious coexistence with science\, nature\, sustainability\, and the world around us. \nOpen Saturdays and Sundays from 12:00 – 6:00 p.m. \nSalem Arts Association Galleries\, 159 Derby Street\, Salem MA 01970

SUMMARY:Science and Spirit in Italian Renaissance Painting
DESCRIPTION:Presented by: Rocco Gangle Philosophy Professor\, Endicott College \nThe form and function of the painted image changed drastically during the 15th-century Italian Renaissance. From the late medieval paintings of Giotto to works of Renaissance painters like Botticelli and da Vinci\, one feels as though stepping from an old world into a new one. What were the sources of this transformation of image and world? How was this transformation related to other cultural shifts such as the rise of humanism\, a burgeoning secular society\, and the scientific revolution? This presentation examines the religious\, philosophical\, and scientific backgrounds to the changes of the image in Italian Renaissance painting\, in particular the development of linear perspective techniques\, and connects this visual revolution in painting to its accompanying spiritual\, cultural\, and scientific revolutions.

SUMMARY:Image\, Invention\, and Imagination: A Series on Art & Community Through the Ages
DESCRIPTION:On July 7\, 1956\, the librettist John Treville Latouche’s seminal American Opera The Ballad of Baby Doe premiered in Central City\, Colorado. “It’s about love and It’s about money\,” Latouche had joked\, in predicting the public’s response to the Opera\, “And there’s no combination an American audience likes more!” Today\, The Ballad of Baby Doe is often cited as one of the most significant Operas in the American canon\, but Latouche would never know just how right he had been. One month later\, John Latouche was dead. He was 41. \nOver the course of his short years\, Latouche lived a remarkably dynamic life; like a brilliant star\, he pulled some of the most important artistic figures of 20th-century American culture into his brief orbit. The story of the community that Latouche anchored features well-known characters such as composer Leonard Bernstein and artist Marcel Duchamp and local figures like Margarett McKean and Hammond Castle Museum’s own John Hays Hammond Jr. \nIn fact\, through Latouche’s legacy\, a curious assembly of artists\, poets\, and occultists\, many of them Queer\, came to assemble at Hammond Castle Museum in its founder’s final years. This is a story about the life of John Latouche\, but it is also a story about love. About money. About art. About magick. About false accusations of murder\, and more. This lecture\, the final in Hammond Castle Museum’s May Series on Art & Community Through the Ages\, will also serve as an introduction to Hammond Castle Museum’s June Pride Month programming.
