SUMMARY:Our Time On Earth – 18th Annual PEM Inspirational Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:Inspired by PEM – Our Time on Earth:  Our 18th Annual PEM Inspirational Exhibition invites artists to take inspiration from the PEM exhibition “Our Time on Earth\, on view at the Peabody Essex Museum through June 9\, 2024.  From the PEM\, “Part of PEM’s Climate + Environment Initiative\, this traveling exhibition from the Barbican Centre in London celebrates the power of global creativity to transform the conversation around the climate emergency.” \n\nReception: Friday\, April 12\, 2024\, 6:00-8:00 PM\nExhibition Dates: April 13 – May 18\, 2024\n\nWe challenged our artists to really consider the materials used in pieces created for this exhibit – think about the environmental and climate impacts we make when we create our arts\, and ways that we can lift the conversation around climate change and collapse.  \n“This exhibition invites us to imagine ways that art\, design and science together can help us envision a positive future for our planet\,” said Jane Winchell\, the Sarah Fraser Robbins Director of PEM’s Dotty Brown Art & Nature Center. \nLocal artists submitted artwork for this exhibition that explores the themes of our harmonious coexistence with science\, nature\, sustainability\, and the world around us. \nOpen Saturdays and Sundays from 12:00 – 6:00 p.m. \nSalem Arts Association Galleries\, 159 Derby Street\, Salem MA 01970

SUMMARY:Minimalism at Salem Arts Association
DESCRIPTION:A form of abstract art that came about in the 1950’s in the US and spread worldwide\, minimalism was best described as art with no subtext or\, “What you see is what you get.”  Salem Arts Association invited our artist members to present the essence of their expression\, to strip down their creative process to concepts that represent a world of simplicity where less is more\, and to explore and play with the idea that art doesn’t necessarily have to represent a deep thought or evoke emotion – sometimes\, it can just… be.

SUMMARY:SOMETHING ROTTEN at Salem State University
DESCRIPTION:Welcome to the “90’s” – the 1590’s – when a leather-clad wordsmith with swiveling hips is rocking London: Shakespeare! His works are loved by all except the Bottom brothers\, Nick and Nigel. They are desperate to write a hit play and find their fame and fortune\, while also staying ahead of their money lenders. Enter local soothsayer Nostradamus who foretells that the future of theatre is singing\, dancing\, and acting at the same time\, setting the Bottom brothers off to write the world’s first musical! But amidst the scandalous excitement of Opening Night\, the Bottom Brothers realize that reaching the top means being true to thine own self…and all that jazz. \nThis production is set in a Renaissance Faire\, offering the audience an immersive experience the moment they walk in the door\, Audience members are HIGHLY encouraged to come in Ren Faire costumes. You might even end up on stage! Filled with fabulous musical numbers and a hilarious plot line\, this irresistible ode to musicals is a dose of pure Broadway fun! \nWritten by Karey Kirkpatrick and John O’Farrell\nMusic and Lyrics by Wayne Kirkpatrick and Karey Kirkpatrick\nConceived by Karey Kirkpatrick and Wayne Kirkpatrick \nFriday\, April 19\, is SALEM NIGHT. Free admission for all Salem residents. \nTICKETS \n$15 general/$10 seniors/free for all students with student ID and under 18.

SUMMARY:“A Modest Little Art Show That Wasn’t” with Jim McAllister
DESCRIPTION:Join us from 3:30-4:00 pm for beverages and bites\, socializing with friends and acquaintances\, and an opportunity to meet Jim McAllister. LECTURE BEGINS AT 4:00PM. \n\nAt a glance\, the 1939 art exhibition at Hamilton Hall\, a part of the June 28th “Chestnut Street Day” celebration\, seemed like a typical neighborhood show. However\, it was significantly more. \nThe exhibition showcased works from local amateur painters and art teachers\, sprinkled with oils or watercolors from a handful of artists whose works were also displayed in major museums. These artists were well-known among American art museum curators\, critics\, dealers\, and collectors. Fifty years prior\, members of this group\, including long-time Salem residents Frank Weston Benson\, Ross Sterling Turner\, and Philip Little\, had established the foundation for the thriving Salem art colony. \nLocal historian Jim McAllister notes that recent years had been hard on many of these aging artists\, making the 1939 show at Hamilton Hall a tribute and a poignant farewell to the Salem art colony and its members. \nMcAllister uses the exhibit to highlight some of the more prominent exhibitors and introduce their esteemed but lesser-known colleagues. \nHe also delves into the intriguing professional relationships among Salem artists\, dating back to the 1880s\, their connection to the Chestnut Street neighborhood\, and their contribution to the city’s cultural life.
