These unique ocean dwellers\, sometimes called the “unicorns of the sea\,” spend their lives in the Arctic waters of Canada\, Greenland\, Norway and Russia. Learn about their changing Arctic ecosystem through firsthand accounts of scientists and Inuit community members. Hear soundscapes of the Arctic\, including the evocative vocalizations of the narwhal\, and touch an 8-foot-long cast of a real narwhal tusk. \nOn view in The Dotty Brown Art & Nature Center\, this family-friendly\, interactive exhibition is part of PEM’s interdisciplinary Climate + Environment Initiative. Narwhal: Revealing an Arctic Legend includes contemporary Inuit sculptures and prints and a historic book from PEM’s Phillips Library collection. The exhibition is organized by the Smithsonian Institution Traveling Exhibition Service in collaboration with the Smithsonian’s National Museum of Natural History and is on view at PEM September 28\, 2024 through June 15\, 2025.

SUMMARY:Narwhal: Revealing an Arctic Legend at The PEM
DESCRIPTION:SALEM\, MA –  This fall\, the Peabody Essex Museum (PEM) invites visitors to dive deep into the world of narwhals. These unique ocean dwellers\, sometimes called the “unicorns of the sea\,” spend their lives in the Arctic waters of Canada\, Greenland\, Norway and Russia. Learn about their changing Arctic ecosystem through firsthand accounts of scientists and Inuit community members. Hear soundscapes of the Arctic\, including the evocative vocalizations of the narwhal\, and touch an 8-foot-long cast of a real narwhal tusk. \nOn view in The Dotty Brown Art & Nature Center\, this family-friendly\, interactive exhibition is part of PEM’s interdisciplinary Climate + Environment Initiative. Narwhal: Revealing an Arctic Legend includes contemporary Inuit sculptures and prints and a historic book from PEM’s Phillips Library collection. The exhibition is organized by the Smithsonian Institution Traveling Exhibition Service in collaboration with the Smithsonian’s National Museum of Natural History and is on view at PEM September 28\, 2024 through June 15\, 2025.

DESCRIPTION:Salem Main Streets and the Salem Chamber of Commerce invite you to come enjoy the annual Salem’s So Sweet Chocolate; Ice Sculpture Festival – a decadent tradition of delectable chocolate\, sparkling ice sculptures\, and Valentine’s Day shopping! Now in its 23rd year\, the signature elements of the festival include a Friday night kickoff party\, 30 ice sculptures sprinkled around the downtown\, two nights of illuminated sculptures\, a “Chocolate Hearts” game with prizes\, live music\, and sweet specials and promotions at local shops and restaurants throughout the city. It is Salem’s sweetest time of year! \nElements of this year’s festival will include: \n\nIce sculptures around town\, starting with installation on the Essex Street Pedestrian Mall on Friday\, Feb. 7th\nEvening illumination of ice sculptures on Friday\, Feb. 7 and Saturday\, Feb. 8 from 5 pm to 9 pm\nA Kickoff Party (tickets on sale late 2024) and late night shopping on Friday\, Feb. 7\nThe Chocolate Hearts Challenge on Saturday\, Feb. 8 and Sunday\, Feb. 9 – an QR code game in businesses around town with prizes for participants\nSweet treats and deals at many of the amazing local shops and eateries all weekend!
