DESCRIPTION:Since its completion in 1929\, Hammond Castle Museum has attracted rumors and urban legends of supernatural associations and occult happening. While most of these wild stories can be dismissed as pure fiction\, the building occupies a fascinating place within the broader historical context of the development of spiritualist and spiritualist-adjacent fields in American culture. The spiritualist movement enthralled America’s upper and middle classes during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Both John Hays Hammond Jr. and his wife\, Irene\, were fascinated with wide-ranging topics including Astrology\, Divination\, Numerology\, Extrasensory Perception (ESP)\, and Mediumship. \nEvery Thursday evening in August\, September\, and October (and even a couple of Wednesday nights in October too) we offer Spiritualism Tours\, This specialty tour explores the history of American spiritualism\, with a particular focus on contextualizing the movement within broader contemporary cultural trends and discussing the Hammonds’ own complicated engagements with these cultural phenomena. From John Hays Hammond Jr.’s attempts to communicate with supernatural entities using a Faraday Cage\, to Irene Hammond’s work on a comprehensive survey of astrological signs; over the course of this approximately 55-minute fully-guided tour\, the dramatic gothic-inspired architecture of the building and night-time atmosphere will set the stage for a fun and informative seasonal experience unlike any other! \nCarry-In/Carry-Out Picnics: Guests may enjoy a carry-in/carry-out picnic on our seaside lawn before their tour on Thursday evenings in August! Reservations are $5 per party and start one hour prior to your ticketed evening tour. Reservations are required in advance.  Hammond Castle Museum members enjoy complimentary picnic reservations.

DESCRIPTION:This autumn\, you are invited to celebrate National Novel Writing Month by joining Hammond Castle Museum and CALYX Press for a month-long writing workshop designed to stimulate the senses\, engage the imagination\, and encourage your commitment to cultivating a daily writing practice.  Inspired by the recently discovered astrological writings of Madame Renee Longquille—the esoteric alter-identity of Irene Fenton Hammond—registration includes two guided tours and two writing workshops.   In addition\, participants will receive a 1 Volume (3 Issue) subscription to CALYX:  A Journal of Art and Literature by Women\,  free submission to CALYX during the journal’s 2023-2024 open reading period\, and a set of prompts designed to inspire continued writing at the Castle throughout the month of November\, and complimentary admission to Hammond Castle Museum’s Quills to Quest Writers’ Celebration on Thursday\, November 30th.  The cost of the workshop series is $115. \nWorkshop participants will also have the option of participating at a discounted price in the month’s\, Quills to Quests: Novelists & Authors Open Writing Days. Writers may enjoy quiet access to many of the rooms within including the Great Hall from noon to 8 pm on specific dates throughout November. Tables\, chairs\, and extension cords will be provided for use in the Great Hall and Side Chapel. Writers are encouraged to explore the rest of the Museum but these rooms will not be formally set to accommodate writers. We encourage you to bring a small\, foldable chair or small matt on which to sit if you will wish spend time writing in any of the other open rooms within. Writing Days and Workshop: $230. \nPlease note: WiFi and electrical outlets are not available in many areas within the Museum. Please plan accordingly.

DESCRIPTION:What better place to trick or treat than at an old seaside castle? We have everything you need to ignite your child’s imagination: a drawbridge\, a spiral staircase\, and a Great Hall\nWe will have spooky music\, multiple trick-or-treat stations inside the castle\, and bubbles\, snacks\, stories\, and a craft at the 13th-century arches. You bring the scary costumes.\n\nTimed Trick or Treat sessions include five treat stations set up within the Castle starting on our drawbridge and leading into the Great Hall. The program will conclude with bubbles\, a craft\, and snacks outside at the Arches. Trick or Treater tickets are $10\, Adult Chaperone tickets are $5.\n\n*This ticket grants you access to the Trick Or Treat event. At the time of this event\, the Museum will be closed to tours. If you wish to tour Hammond Castle Museum on the day of the ticketed event\, Self-Guided Tour tickets may be purchased in the Museum Shop at a 20% discount. The last tours begin at 2 pm. Proof of purchase of the Trick or Treat event will be required.\n\nAll proceeds from this program will support the restoration and preservation of the museum.
