DESCRIPTION:The Salem State Series will go virtual Wednesday\, July 15! \nSalem State University’s long-running and popular speaker series will celebrate its 39th year by going virtual and welcoming back medical anthropologist and physician Paul Farmer\, MD\, PhD on Wednesday\, July 15 at 6 pm. \nFarmer\, co-founder and chief strategist of international non-profit Partners in Health (PIH)\, will discuss how his organization is leading the COVID-19 contact tracing efforts in Massachusetts and the importance of these efforts in mitigating the spread of COVID-19. \n\nSince 1987\, PIH has provided direct health care services and undertaken research and advocacy activities on behalf of those who are sick and living in poverty. The organization’s expertise in responding to outbreaks around the world make it uniquely positioned to respond to COVID-19 needs not only in Massachusetts\, but worldwide. \nThe event will be complimentary and held virtually. Marshall is an Emmy-award winning journalist and physician who serves as the regular health reporter at WBZ-TV in Boston. A practicing physician who is board certified in both internal medicine and pediatrics\, Marshall serves on the staff at Harvard Medical School and practices at the Massachusetts General Hospital’s (MGH) Chelsea Urgent Care Clinic and MGH Revere Health Center. \nFounded in 1982 as one of the first high-profile speaker series in the country\, the Salem State University Series has hosted countless world leaders\, artists\, athletes\, and intellectuals on its suburban North Shore campus. You only need to purchase one ticket but several people can watch with you. \nThey came as enslaved people and reshaped America. Blacks were first enslaved in Massachusetts in Salem in 1638\, four years after Gov. John Winthrop wrote our first slavery law in 1634. After gaining freedom shorty after the writing of the Massachusetts constitution\, blacks made great strides in the community and major contributions to Salem and the state by influencing policy\, establishing businesses and leading the abolitionist movement. \nThe event is live but we will show you locations around Salem\, Massachusetts via virtual background and screen shares. DESCRIPTION:The Salem Farmers’ Market is a tradition that dates back to 1634. With its peak around 1930\, where more than 40 vendors sold goods in collapsible wooden stalls\, an estimated 10\,000 people visited the market on a single Saturday. In the early 1970s\, the market ended\, and the Salem Redevelopment Authority redesigned the square into what we now know as Derby Square. \nThe Salem Farmers’ Market runs through mid-October\, every Thursday from 3 pm to 7 pm.
