SUMMARY:Spiritualism Tours of Hammond Castle Museum
DESCRIPTION:Since its completion in 1929\, Hammond Castle Museum has attracted rumors and urban legends of supernatural associations and occult happening. While most of these wild stories can be dismissed as pure fiction\, the building occupies a fascinating place within the broader historical context of the development of spiritualist and spiritualist-adjacent fields in American culture. The spiritualist movement enthralled America’s upper and middle classes during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Both John Hays Hammond Jr. and his wife\, Irene\, were fascinated with wide-ranging topics including Astrology\, Divination\, Numerology\, Extrasensory Perception (ESP)\, and Mediumship. \nEvery Thursday evening in August\, September\, and October (and even a couple of Wednesday nights in October too) we offer Spiritualism Tours\, This specialty tour explores the history of American spiritualism\, with a particular focus on contextualizing the movement within broader contemporary cultural trends and discussing the Hammonds’ own complicated engagements with these cultural phenomena. From John Hays Hammond Jr.’s attempts to communicate with supernatural entities using a Faraday Cage\, to Irene Hammond’s work on a comprehensive survey of astrological signs; over the course of this approximately 55-minute fully-guided tour\, the dramatic gothic-inspired architecture of the building and night-time atmosphere will set the stage for a fun and informative seasonal experience unlike any other! \nCarry-In/Carry-Out Picnics: Guests may enjoy a carry-in/carry-out picnic on our seaside lawn before their tour on Thursday evenings in August! Reservations are $5 per party and start one hour prior to your ticketed evening tour. Reservations are required in advance.  Hammond Castle Museum members enjoy complimentary picnic reservations.

The community is invited to connect with the artist to provide feedback on details for the commissioned Charlotte Forten Memorial sculpture such as Charlotte’s expression and likeness\, which of her writings to include\, and where they should adorn the statue. \nAn engaging speaking program led by the City of Salem Human Rights Coalition and including a variety of Salem residents and local Black-centered organizational leaders will formally kick off Black History Month in Salem. \nFollowing the speaking portion of the event\, guests will be invited to join the City of Salem Human Rights Coalition outdoors in Riley Plaza for a formal Flag Raising.  (Attendees are encouraged to dress warmly in anticipation of chilly outdoor temperatures.) \nCome celebrate and honor Black History in Salem\, stay for the hot chocolate and community!

SUMMARY:Tea Leaf and Coffee Reading w/ Jezmina Von Thiele
DESCRIPTION:What does the cup say? Join us with instructor Jezmina Von Thiele (they/she) to learn the history and methods of tea leaf + coffee ground reading! \nHave you ever been curious to know what a simple cup of herbs or coffee grounds could tell you? To bring their symbols and messages to life\, just add water. In this workshop\, students will have the opportunity to learn the origins and techniques of tea leaf & coffee ground reading (also known as tasseomancy or tasseography)\, as well as grow in their divination skills while gaining relevant and essential knowledge regarding history and cultural context. Jezmina is of mixed Sinti Romani heritage\, and learned these practices from their grandmother. They have been reading professionally ever since. \n  \nTogether we will cover:\n-a ritual for tea leaf and coffee reading\n-different tea leaves and how to approach them\n-common symbols found in the cup\n-practices for developing your intuition\n-the cultural and historical context for this form of divination\, as well as how to respectfully engage with it. \nYou will be emailed a PDF of notes after the class\, so note taking during class is encouraged if you find it helpful\, but it’s not necessary. \n  \nOther materials that you will need are a teacup\, ideally with a shallow round bottom\, and a saucer. If you have a teapot without a strainer in the spout\, that is a great\, but you can do without it. You will also need loose leaf tea leaves\, sold and labeled as such. I do not recommend cutting open a teabag because the leaves are too finely cut. You will also need the ability to boil water\, as you will be making a cup of tea and drinking it during the class\, and interpreting the leaves left at the bottom. SUMMARY:Earth Vows: Mixed Media Wall Hangings with the PEM
DESCRIPTION:Consider how we can take action to address climate change by creating a mixed media personal pledge\, or “Earth vow.” Using fabric\, paint and other materials\, create a beautiful reminder of your commitment to take care of our planet and celebrate the Our Time on Earth exhibition\, opening on February 17. \nRegular Drop-in Art Making is held in person Friday–Monday in our Create Space studios. Friday art making is recommended for ages 10 to adult\, while Saturday–Monday activities are suitable for ages 4 and up. Activities are created and led by PEM’s Education team.

This year it will be on a trolley for the second time! \n\n \nThe tour takes approximately 1 hour and 15 minutes and covers surprising\, scandalous and often murderous stories of love gone wrong throughout Salem’s past.\n\n \nLast year each ticket came with hot chocolate\, goodie bags\, black roses and more. This year\, we are looking forward to even more exciting surprises. This annual event sells out quick and space is limited!
