DESCRIPTION:Subject:Matter is a Boston based tap dance company\, under the direction of choreographer Ian Berg\, with the aim of presenting new\, cutting-edge tap dance work primarily in the Boston area. \nThis concert will feature “Blowout”\, based on the music from Herbie Hancock’s 1967 album of the same name. It features a live sextet and four dancers gliding and stomping through new arrangements of the album’s tunes. \nThe second part of the evening is “Songbook” is a collection of dances made to songs from the Great American Songbook including Mack the Knife\, Have You Met Miss Jones?\, Song For My Father\, Equinox and more. \nIan Berg is a Boston-based tap dancer originally from Chicago\, IL. Ian has been dancing since an early age and has training and performance experience in tap dance\, ballet\, modern dance\, jazz\, contact improvisation and a variety of other styles and approaches. In high school\, Ian trained at the Joffrey Academy in Chicago while also dancing with the renowned Chicago based tap company MADD Rhythms\, of which he is still a member. Ian is also a musician\, composer\, and arranger of music\, and an alum of The School at Jacob’s Pillow and the Boston Conservatory with a BFA in Contemporary Dance Performance. \nTickets\n$20 general\n$15 seniors and non-Salem State students 18 and above \nUnder 18 free* (under 18 tickets need to be reserved by phone and picked up at the door with ID). \nSalem State students receive free admission with ID and may pick up tickets at the box office prior to the performance.

Painted during the Civil Rights era by one of the best-known black American artists of the 20th century\, the series of 30 panels depicts pivotal moments in early American history with an emphasis on the contributions that black people\, Native Americans\, and women made in shaping our nation’s founding and identity. The exhibition\, organized by PEM and touring nationally through 2021\, tackles a question central to Lawrence’s work: “What is the cost of democracy for all?“ PEM celebrates the exhibition opening with FREE museum admission all weekend long — Saturday\, January 18\, through Monday\, January 20 — and a full roster of programming\, including live music\, storytelling\, artmaking and more.

SUMMARY:Geomancy: An Early Modern Sister of Astrology
DESCRIPTION:At its height in the Renaissance\, geomancy was one of the most popular and well-regarded forms of divination. It was the preferred oracle of monarchs and sages. Occult philosophers swore by it as one of the most accurate and insightful oracles available. While geomancy’s earliest origins lie in Arabic traditions\, it swiftly became popular across Europe in the late medieval period\, and bears many similarities to West African geomantic traditions of divination\, and has spread all over the globe in various forms. \nGeomancy examines the roles of the planets in our daily lives\, and while it utilizes the language and expression of astrology\, is not dependent on astronomical measure. Our questions are answered in this familiar language of the stars\, showing how these titanic forces are playing out in our lives. It is not a replacement for astrology (rather\, its “Sister” oracle)\, although many of the terms will be famliar to an astrologer. No previous knowledge of astrology or sorcery is needed to attend or follow this lecture; on the other hand\, these explorations and presentation of the art should refresh and enliven those already familiar with these crafts and even geomancy itself. \nThis presentation is delivered by Dr Alexander Cummins\, himself both a historian of magic and professional geomancer. And so\, in this lecture\, we will not only examine the historical practice of this incredibly popular Renaissance system of divination\, and celebrate some of its practitioners\, but we will also explore ways in which this oracle can be consulted by modern diviners. \nTickets $10.00
