SUMMARY:History Alive Presents "Homestead"
DESCRIPTION:Homestead is a new\, site-specific play that allows the audience to observe a 17th century colonial family on the brink of panic and witness firsthand how quickly a community can devolve under the pressure of a witchcraft accusation. nIn the farming homestead of the Matthews family\, something unnatural is afoot; twelve-year-old Ruth Matthews has been exhibiting alarming behavior\, and as is customary\, friends\, family\, and neighbors alike are invited to the home to pray for the child and decipher the cause of her symptoms. The audience\, as the proverbial “fly on the wall\,” eavesdrops on the conflicts of men\, women and children as they confront their own fears surrounding the supernatural. Unbeknownst to all but the audience\, there is one guest who has not been invited\, and may very well be the cause of Ruth’s torment. A new interpretation of the New England witchcraft narrative\, Homestead places East Anglian folk beliefs and practices under a microscope for the chance to examine the beginnings of colonial hysteria firsthand. nThe audience is free to investigate the authentic 17th century mansion–the only building in Salem with direct ties to the actual Witch Trials of 1692–to overhear what they will. Each person will end up with a different understanding of how poor Ruth is afflicted. What–or who–is to blame? Has the Devil been raised on New England’s frontier? nFor tickets:nFirst visit: $13nSecond visit: $10nThird visit: $7nhttps://homestead.bpt.menThere are multiple sides to this story—experience others by reactivating your admission for additional show times.nNot appropriate for children under the age of 10. nFind all of History Alive’s performances\, including Cry Innocent\, at HistoryAliveSalem.com. n Source: https://www.salem.org/event/history-alive-presents-homestead/2019-09-20/

SUMMARY:Ribbon-Cutting and Dedication Ceremony for Charlotte Forten Park
DESCRIPTION:The City of Salem will host a ribbon cutting ceremony to honor the newly named Charlotte Forten Park located at 289 Derby Street. The ceremony will honor the legacy of Charlotte Forten\, an abolitionist\, women’s right’s activist\, and Salem State University’s first African-American graduate. nIn addition to the ribbon cutting\, speakers at the event will include Mayor Kim Driscoll\, Salem State President John Keenan and Salem State Chief of Staff Nate Bryant. The event will also include readings and performances by Salem State community members and Salem State students and a performance by Fly Kidz. The event\, which is free and open to the public\, will include a reception during which refreshments and beer and wine will be available to purchase. nThe ribbon cutting and performances will take place between 6:00 p.m. and 7:00 p.m.\, and the celebration continues from 7:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. with additional live performances\, food\, and beverages. nCharlotte Forten Park was designed through a community-based process by landscape designers Clara Batchelor and Megan Tomkins of CBA Landscape Architects. The contractor for the project was Sumco Eco Contracting. Construction of the park was possible thanks to a grant from the Commonwealth of Massachusetts’ Executive Office of Energy and Environmental Affairs. nSalem residents chose to name the park after Forten in July when Mayor Driscoll asked residents to weigh in on the process by voting on a slate of proposed names\, which included Forten. Charlotte Forten Park was the preferred choice among those who voted. nThe roughly 25\,000 square foot Charlotte Forten Park\, formerly a vacant lot\, was constructed with state grant funds and includes a plaza for programs and performances\, a harbor-walk around the South River\, swing seating facing the water\, built-in percussion features\, and green space. The park will allow park-goers to connect to Downtown Salem\, the Point neighborhood and Salem’s historic waterfront. The park will pay tribute to Forten’s legacy and celebrate all that she achieved for generations to come. nCharlotte Forten was an educator\, writer\, poet\, abolitionist\, and women’s rights activist. Forten was originally from Philadelphia where she was brought up in a prominent abolitionist family and her desire for an equal education led her to Salem\, Massachusetts\, where she was the first African-American to graduate from the Salem Normal School\, now Salem State University\, with the class of 1856. nThroughout her life\, Forten faced inequality due to her race and gender; however\, that did not deter her. She used her pen to express her frustrations and advocate for solutions. Her life’s work as a poet and translator showcased her as a leading social justice activist. Forten\, who was an advocate for equality for women and people of color\, education for all\, and for the end of slavery\, was also the first northern African-American teacher to go south to teach former slaves. n Source: https://www.salem.org/event/ribbon-cutting-and-dedication-ceremony-for-charlotte-forten-park/

SUMMARY:Salem Literary Festival
DESCRIPTION:Now presented by the Salem Athenaeum\, the Salem Literary Festival was founded by Beth Simpson in 2008 as an extension of the events she created for the now defunct Cornerstone Bookstore. Since then\, the Salem Lit Fest has grown to include hundreds of attendees\, scores of volunteers\, and dozens of authors. In 2014\, the festival joined forces with New York Times bestselling author Brunonia Barry and her organization\, Readers and Writers\, Inc. The LitFest was held at historic venues in and around Salem that unite authors and book lovers. nIn 2016\, the baton was passed by Bru to longtime LitFest partner\, the Salem Athenaeum\, which presented the 2017 festival in June. nThe Salem Lit Fest aims to inspire and promote literacy and a love of books and reading through programming featuring both contemporary authors and engagement with classic works of literature. nFind the complete schedule at salemlitfest.org. n Source: https://www.salem.org/event/salem-literary-festival-2/2019-09-20/
