DESCRIPTION:Jim McAllister’s  \nLUNCHTIME LECTURES \nEvery weekday at noon \nHalf hour (plus) illustrated talks on Zoom \nOnly five bucks! \n(see bottom of page for details) \n  \nWeek Four Schedule \nSpecial Event:  “Cocktails and Culture” Lecture  \nThis Saturday\, May 16   (5 p.m.)      \n “Magnificent\, Maddening Montparnasse: Expatriate Paris in the Twenties” \nLeaving Salem behind for a moment\, we journey to a time and place where Hemingway Picasso\, Stein\, Stravinsky and many other artists\, writers and composers helped usher in the age of modernism… \n  \nWeekday Lunchtime Lectures \n  \nMonday\, May 18   “Three Generations of Service: The Bertram-Emmerton Clan” \nJohn Bertram and his heirs used the fortune he made in the maritime trade to create Salem Hospital\, the House of the Seven Gables museum/settlement\, homes for aged\, and other service institutions. \n  \nTuesday\, May 19   “Salem in Black and White” \nA nostalgic selection of personal images of Salem public figures and local characters\, businesses\, and fairs and festivals – taken between 1978 and 1995 \n  \nWednesday\, May 20  “The Seafaring Life” \nThe ”romance of the sea” belonged to authors and artists; many of those who lived and worked aboard ships had a different story to tell in their logs\, journals and personal memoirs.  \n  \nThursday\, May 21    “Great Salem Stories” \nAnecdotes ranging from the proverbial “sublime to the ridiculous” culled from the vast collection of books written by local authors or about Salem in days gone by \n  \nFriday\, May  22    “A Half-Century of Preservation in Salem 1910-1960” \nA look back at the efforts of the many organizations and individuals whose efforts to save our architectural treasures bore fruit \n  \nAll talks by reservation only!   Reservations accepted only by email (culturecorner@gmail.com).  \n Please note I have limited the number of people that can access each talk. To honor the 100th anniversary of this historic milestone\, The House of the Seven Gables will celebrate the enterprising spirit of women and their continuing impact with a year of special events. \nThis lecture has been postponed to May\, 20\, 2020 at 6:30 pm.  \nIf you have registered for this event and can attend on May 20 – do nothing! Your registration will be good for that day. \nIf you have registered and cannot attend the rescheduled lecture\, please email jarrison@7gables.org. We’ll work on issuing refunds over the next few days. \nAll other public events The House of the Seven Gables will be assessed on a case-by-case basis. We’ll be sure to offer outreach on our social media channels and emails with updates.
