Virtual Salem State Series: Paul Farmer, MD

July 15, 2020 @ 6:00 pm - 7:30 pm

The Salem State Series will go virtual Wednesday, July 15!

Salem State University’s long-running and popular speaker series will celebrate its 39th year by going virtual and welcoming back medical anthropologist and physician Paul Farmer, MD, PhD on Wednesday, July 15 at 6 pm.

Farmer, co-founder and chief strategist of international non-profit Partners in Health (PIH), will discuss how his organization is leading the COVID-19 contact tracing efforts in Massachusetts and the importance of these efforts in mitigating the spread of COVID-19.

Since 1987, PIH has provided direct health care services and undertaken research and advocacy activities on behalf of those who are sick and living in poverty. The organization’s expertise in responding to outbreaks around the world make it uniquely positioned to respond to COVID-19 needs not only in Massachusetts, but worldwide.

The event will be complimentary and held virtually. Registration is required. Click here to register: https://www.salemstate.edu/…/annual-even…/salem-state-series

Farmer has dedicated his life to improving health care for the world’s poorest people, and written extensively on health, human rights and the consequences of social inequality. Through his organization, Farmer and his colleagues in the U.S. and around the world have pioneered novel community-based treatment strategies that help give resource-poor areas access to high-quality health care.

Farmer will be joined by Mallika Marshall, MD ‘10H. Marshall is an Emmy-award winning journalist and physician who serves as the regular health reporter at WBZ-TV in Boston. A practicing physician who is board certified in both internal medicine and pediatrics, Marshall serves on the staff at Harvard Medical School and practices at the Massachusetts General Hospital’s (MGH) Chelsea Urgent Care Clinic and MGH Revere Health Center.

Founded in 1982 as one of the first high-profile speaker series in the country, the Salem State University Series has hosted countless world leaders, artists, athletes, and intellectuals on its suburban North Shore campus. Over the years, thousands of patrons have come to Salem State to hear what Series speakers have to say on a wide variety of subjects. A self-supporting community enrichment program presented through the generous and dedicated support of corporate and individual sponsors alike, the Series is but one facet of the university’s public education mission.
