The Society, headquartered in a rooftop “ship’s cabin” at the Hawthorne Hotel, is Salem’s oldest charitable organization and has been promoting maritime safety measures and knowledge since 1766
Wednesday, July 22 “Put’s Club” Revisited
Founded in 1916 and run with an iron fist by Alfred Putnam for more 25 years, this small Salem club featured monthly talks on an amazing variety of subjects given by its equally amazing members
Thursday, July 23 Dogs I have Owned … Or Vice Versa
A repeat of a 2018 talk wherein my pets – past and present – and their varied personalities become metaphors for the world of canines and for all they bring to our collective “tables”
Friday, July 24 Colonial Chaos: The Roger Williams Saga
The arrival of this radical Separatist in Salem in the 1630s would create myriad problems for the town and the Massachusetts Bay Colony and lead to the founding of the present day state of Rhode Island.
