Join Jim McAllister as he traces the Salem Common area’s evolving landscape and land usage; recalls long-forgotten almshouses and bath houses, schools, inns, institutions, tourist attractions, historic landmarks and industries; and introduces former neighborhood merchants, statesmen, artists, scientists (and even a very strange seer) and some of their magnificent mansions. The talk will also explore past usage of the Salem Common for important events and as a setting for novels, films, and works of art.
The lecture will be held in the lower level Library in the Historic Hawthorne Hotel on Salem Common. Admission is $15 and reservations are suggested. Contact Jim at culturecorner@gmail.com or 978.979.5907.
The Hawthorne Hotel is offering lecture attendees who dine in its Nathaniel’s Restaurant a 20% discount on meals or desserts (excluding alcoholic beverages).
